This latest addition to the Endocrine Surgical library is a gem to be savored at leisure. It is a comprehensive review and is on the cutting edge of current knowledge regarding surgical endocrinology. The fact that the three outstanding editors of Endocrine Surgery are from widely separated geographic continents (Europe, Asia and America) clearly establishes the flavor for this international contribution. The surgical arena and the endocrine surgical subspe- alty, in particular, is truly international in scope, as it should be, and today represents a unique close knit family. This is a healthy phenomenon for it allows rapid and constant exchange of information and ideas by dedicated surgeons, endocrinologists, pathologists, radiologists, and researchers who personally know and respect each other, and who share a clear cut common goal – to simply do what is best for each and every patient afflicted with an endocrine disorder. The astute reader of this encompassing collectionofcontributions will notice a ‘‘changing of the guard’’ phenomenon as well. Although there are well-known players in this endocrine surgical orchestra, there are, pleasingly, a number of less well-known (albeit for a short time only) contributors. This is very good indeed and is something that pleases me – a member of the old guard, immensely. The success of surgical education, and as a consequence, of patient care, is that each successive generation should be better and wiser than the prec- ing one. If this is not so, the previous generation has dismally failed.

Coloproctology is a surgical specialty which dynamically changes every few years. There is a profusion of colorectal textbooks but specialty series on particularly complex topics as well as on the specialized management approach for trainees and training colorectal surgeons are actually few. The aim of this text is a superior quality colorectal book written by world experts targeted at senior surgical and colorectal trainees and young consultant coloproctologists in current areas of subspecialty expertise. The structure of the chapters is current and is based on what does not appear and is not addressed in current colorectal textbooks. This series has proven useful in areas already represented, including Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery, Transplantation Surgery, etc. The text is aimed at being relatively didactic with an algorithm approach to specialized areas within coloproctology which could potentially be updated every 3 years or so with new topics to create a set for didactic training in colorectal surgery. It is anticipated that these texts will become valuable teaching textbooks and part of every coloproctologist’s armamentarium as well as appealing to all general surgeons and surgical trainees engaged in complex elective and emergency colorectal surgery.

It is a pleasure to introduce a new specialist surgery series textbook entitled Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. When I was approached to edit this book, I realized that it would be a tremendous task and asked Dr. Marita Eisenmann-Klein, from Regensburg, Germany, to serve as coeditor. The reason for inviting Dr. Eisenmann-Klein was her important role as Deputy General Secretary of the International Confederation of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery and the intention, to have an international approach and divide the book into chapters where the best experts from different continents and countries would present their contributions. The 52 chapters in this book are divided into eight subcategories of topics and are outlined in the following order: Part I – General Principles presents physiology and wound healing, immunology of tissue transplantation, anesthesia, and critical care. Part II – General Surgical Techniques presents principles of wound repair, grafts, local and regional ? aps, microsurgical techniques, minimally invasive techniques of plastic surgery, liposuction techniques, biomaterials in craniofacial surgery, and tissue engineering. Part III – Skin and Adnexa presents skin anatomy and physiology, congenital malf- mations, burns and trauma, benign and malignant skin tumors, and aesthetic skin treatments.

Practical Urology – Essential Principles and Practice focuses on aspects of urology which are often forgotten in contemporary practice, but nevertheless are the subject of incremental advances and form the basis of much of the non-oncological practice.  This book reviews the upper tract, pelvo-ureteric junction obstruction, recent advances in renal calculus disease, pharmacology of the bladder and functional disorders of the lower urinary tract.  It also addresses aspects of physiology of the lower tract and important issues of neurourology and urogynaecology.  Alongside this, with Laparoscopy becoming increasingly important, the subject is extensively covered in the context of an essential update on laparoscopic anatomy.  Practical Urology – Essential Principles and Practice provides an important contribution to those who wish to have a global overview of what is new in functional urology.
