This volume highlights the contributions of tutors and their pedagogies to the field of education, focusing on the lived-experiences of tutors in alternative education programs in New Zealand. Tutors' voices were largely absent from education literature, yet, they are charged with providing a holistic education to disenfranchised young people, and they have artfully re-engaged many of their students into learning. This monograph presents the author’s poetic inquiry methodology and methods that are intended to inspire others to take risks using arts-based educational research. Based on in-depth interviews, field work, and a performative workshop with tutor participants, the author created more than 200 poems. Drawing on these poetic findings, 21 constellations of tutor essences were created. From these, the tutor emerges as an holistic educator, whose pedagogies offer a conceptual foundation on which future training and development of tutors can build, and from which conventional schools can learn inclusive ways of working with all students.

This book, based on a critical/collective/auto/ethnographic research project, describes an assemblage of theoretically informed, arts-based methods that aim to promote multiplicity and thinking. It explores multiplicities of knowing, sensing, doing and being, generated by analyzing knowing frames, poetry, reading aloud, fableing, playwriting and other inventive, playful and scholarly ways of working with experiences and stories. By offering engaging and inspiring strategies that can disturb standardizations and interrupt cultural normativities, the book sheds light on the conditions that might be present in cultural contexts that enable diversity and creativity. The research project on which this book is based originated from a contradictory set of conditions characterized on the one hand by a marked interest in creative research methods and novel knowledge practices and, on the other hand, by a widespread concern that we live in increasingly standardized times, featuring systems that specify objectives ahead of time, demand compliance and narrow the possibilities for human action. The book takes readers on an arts-based journey designed to enhance the opportunities for imaginative and ethical professional practice in education, human services and the arts.

This book details the creative process, implementation and assessment of two applied theatre projects ("Common Knowledge" and "You Be the Judge") designed to foster reflection on academic integrity issues with students at Brock University. The book examines the usefulness of applied theatre in promoting academic integrity, to both ESL and non-ESL students. It focuses on how the nature of applied theatre can transcend the barriers of language. It shows with great detail on how applied theatre methods benefit ESL people in gaining confidence and a greater understanding of potentially new social norms.

It includes step-by-step description of strategies that researchers can use to create iconographic research poetry from qualitative data. By explicating the processes by which data can be represented in the form of iconographic research poetry and offering exemplars, readers will find specific hands-on strategies for creating their own iconographic research poems. The book contains writing exercises designed to help aspiring iconographic research poets exercise their poetic imagination. It also provides qualitative research instructors with suggestions for integrating iconographic research poetry into the classroom.
