Les principaux axes de cet ouvrage sont les modalités du passage du personnel des temples au service de la couronne ; la mise en place d'un nouveau personnel religieux ; la position des Égyptiens dans l'État lagide.La première partie est la prosopographie du personnel religieux étudié. La seconde partie, après l'établissement d'une typologie des relations observées, étudie le début de l'époque grecque qui se caractérise par une intégration limitée du clergé aussi bien dans l'entourage royal que dans les affaires de l'État. Cette situation s'oppose à celle de la fin du IIème et du Ier siècles, où, souvent, les mêmes personnes dirigent les temples et représentent l'autorité royale. Les IIIème et IIème siècles voient donc la constitution d'un personnel à la fois religieux et civil, phénomène bien connu dans l'Égypte pharaonique mais qui constitue une évolution majeure pour l'Égypte ptolémaïque. Un tel processus peut être compris par l'exemple des pontifes de Ptah à Memphis qui entretiennent d'étroites relations avec le pouvoir.

Collecting papers on historiography, papyrology, history, and material culture, this volume charts the changing faces of Hellenistic civilization from the fourth century B.C. to Late Antiquity. The Macedonian colonisation and the Roman conquest had an important impact on society, politics, and culture of the Eastern Mediterranean. The papers address issues such as bilingualism and the role of ¿invented traditions' in Roman Egypt. They emphasise local differences within the Roman Empire, for example the difficult access inhabitants of Egypt had to Roman citizenship. Other contributions asses the perspective of the sources and how they reveal different facets of Hellenistic society. Drawing on approaches developed in the Section of Ancient History of the University of Leuven, the contributions pay homage to three retiring professors, L. Mooren, G. Schepens, and H. Hauben, who each in their different way have explored the changing faces of Hellenism for the past thirty years.

Aus den Anfängen der hellenistischen Epoche in Ägypten gibt es nur wenige zeitgenössische Zeugnisse. Eines davon ist die Satrapenstele. Diese hieroglyphische Stele dokumentiert eine Landschenkung des Satrapen Ptolemaios an den Tempel von Buto und nennt weitere historische Ereignisse wie die Verlegung der Residenz nach Alexandria. Sie ist seit langem bekannt und wurde mehrfach übersetzt. Einen umfassenden sprachlichen und historischen Kommentar gab es bisher aber noch nicht. Die Stele bildet den Schwerpunkt der vorliegenden Untersuchung zum Verhältnis zwischen makedonischen Herrschern und indigenen Priesterschaften in der frühen Ptolemäerzeit. Der Denkstein steht im Spannungsfeld zwischen den ägyptischen Verfassern und dem makedonischen Protagonisten, weshalb vor allem die Herrscherpräsentation eine besondere Rolle spielt. Zur Prüfung der gewonnenen Ergebnisse wurden zwei weitere hieroglyphische Stelen herangezogen. Die Pithomstele und die Mendesstele berichten über Taten und Kultunterstützung durch Ptolemaios II. So ist die Betrachtung der Entwicklung über zwei Herrschergenerationen hinweg möglich. Zielgruppe der Studie sind Althistoriker und Ägyptologen gleichermaßen.
