Despite the intense political attention that has been focused on accountability, on standardized testing, and on the equity effects of both accountability and testing, the great majority of recent debate in education policy circles has failed to attend to either the dynamism or complexity of these issues and has, instead, been carried out in a dualistic, good versus evil, fashion. In contrast, the scholarship collected in this important new volume is designed to move beyond the prevailing dualism and to push the discourse about accountability, testing, and educational equity in public schools usefully forward, and to provide a much-needed resource for researchers, policy makers, and practitioners.

First Published in 1997. Focusing on a case study from the civil rights movement, the author illuminates the issues and problems that emerge when schools are used to advance social equality. He examines the political controversies surrounding the racial desegregation of public and private schools in Dayton over a 40-year period during which the city initiated several nationally recognized programs to overcome segregation. The book also discusses racial integration in public and religious schools in different parts of the United States during that time. It describes experiences in public schools, Catholic schools, and private schools covering individually guided education, ethnic studies, magnet schools, compensatory education, and the New Futures Program funded by a private foundation. The text is innovative in its survey of the relationships between city administrators, public school officials, and Catholic and private school educators. It also provides important analysis of how curriculum changes have affected desegregation and examines the role of private philanthropies in education.

In Rethinking Academic Politics in (Re)Unified Germany andthe United States, Dr. John Weaver uses case studies to engage historical and contemporary issues in academic politics, arguing for the importance of this often-dismissed and much-bemoaned facet of academic work. Dr. Weaver's unique treatment includes discussions of such hotly debated issues as the Enola Gay exhibit, the science debates in the U.S., and the politics of academic evaluations and hiring practices. Rethinking Academic Politics in (Re)Unified Germany and the United States speaks to the interests of students and scholars of international and comparative education, higher education policy and practice, cultural studies, and science studies.

The essays in the book are organized into three sections in order to address the conceptualization of democracy and citizenship, reform efforts towards democratization in various societies, and educational efforts to foster democratic citizens. Each is written from a different historical and national perspective by an international panel of prominent comparative education scholars and each tackles the theme of democracy and civic duty in education.

This book offers an original and challenging theoretical and empirical approach to mapping the changing nature of teachers' work historically and in the contemporary period. It is an attempt to understand how and in what ways teachers' work has changed following the demise of the post-war settlement and the imminent collapse of teachers' project of professionalism secured through solidaristic strategies such as unionism. Dr. Robertson argues that in order to understand these issues, a more rigorous set of conceptual tools around social class, occupational power and worker control is needed. The first two sections of the book set out to address that problem. The final section elaborates on the changing contexts and conditions for contemporary teachers more generally, and argues that structural and ideological changes within educational provision have led to differing capacities in the realization of class assets.
