Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles – serie

This fully illustrated catalogue of coins of Edward the Confessor and Harold II in the superb collection of the Swedish Royal Coin Cabinet is a fundamental reference work for anyone studying or identifying late Anglo-Saxon coins. The volume catalogues and illustrates 1,280 coins of Edward the Confessor, the largest collection ever published, alongside detailed discussion of the moneyers' names and commentary on a number of specific names. The majority of coins come from Swedish Viking-age finds, and the contents of 108 finds with coins of Edward the Confessor and Harold I are also surveyed. The volume includes a supplement to Part VI (Anglo-Norman coins) which publishes 72 additional coins from the Stockholm collection.

The rich collections of the Hermitage Museum include a remarkable series of Norman and later medieval British coins. Unlike the Hermitage's Anglo-Saxon coins which are mainly from Russian finds, the coins in this volume come from three major private collectors of the nineteenth century, Reichel, Stroganov and Plushkin, who purchased internationally. Thus they include some 60 coins of William I that were purchased in London at the Brumell sale of 1850 and derive from the 1833 hoard from Beauworth, Sussex. For the later middle ages the collection is particularly rich in gold coinage. Virtually all of the 493 coins are illustrated for the first time. They will be a valuable source for medieval numismatists and for those interested in the history of the Hermitage and its collections. This full illustrated catalogue will become the standard reference work for Scottish coins of the middle and later sixteenth century, which include some of the most beautiful coins ever minted in Britain. The collection at the National Museums of Scotland is undoubtedly the largest and most comprehensive public collection of this series in the world. The volume covers the period which commenced with the innovations of James V's second coinage in 1526 and concluded with the last of James VI's issues prior to the Union of the Crowns and the consequent harmonisation of the Scottish and English coinages. It therefore includes all the issues of the period during which the Scottish precious metal coinage reached its apogee in terms of artistic excellence and Renaissance-inspired design. Paradoxically, this was also a time during which poor quality, base metal, coins were minted in enormous quantities. Every coin of the period in the NMS collections is described; every gold and silver piece is illustrated, along with many examples from the large accumulations of everyday coins.A full introduction gives an account of the history of Scottish coin production from 1526 to 1603, and discusses a pioneering metallurgical analysis of Scottish billon coinage issues. This volume completes publication of the Anglo-Saxon component of the rich and diverse coin collection built up in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg. It lists and illustrates over 1,100 late Anglo-Saxon pennies now held in the Hermitage, the bulk of them found in Russian hoards deposited during the early Middle Ages. Among these fine and well-preserved coins are many important rarities representing short-lived types and ephemeral mint-towns. As such it is an important resource for scholars of late Anglo-Saxon history and coinage, and for those interested in the currency which circulated in northern and eastern Europe in the Viking Age.

This is the second and concluding volume in the SCBI series devoted to the collection of Anglo-Saxon and Norman coins in the Grosvenor Museum, Chester. The Grosvenor Museum's holdings in this field derive partly from the matchless collection of coins of the Chester mint formed during the first half of the twentieth century by Dr Willoughby Gardner (1860-1953), and partly from a succession of major hoards of tenth-century date discovered in the city of Chester at intervals since the 1850s.As a result, the Grosvenor Museum collection is of national importance for the study of tenth-century Anglo-Saxon coinage, and the present volume describes and illustrates hundreds of previously unpublished coins of this period.The volume also contains an introductory essay discussing the history of the Chester mint between its foundation in the early years of the tenth century and the major reform of the English coinage carried out in the closing years of the reign of King Edgar (959-75). It explains how to distinguish coins struck at Chester from comparable coins struck at neighbouring mints including Derby, Stafford and Tamworth, and puts on record the fact that during Chester's mid-tenth-century heyday its moneyers were more numerous and probably more productive than those at such other major English cities as London and Winchester.

This book records, illustrates, and discusses the context of more than 1,000 coins from the Anglo-Saxon period, assembled by the author during 60 years of scholarly research and deposited by him in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, on lifetime loan. The composition of the collection reflects this research and is therefore particularly strong in the so-called sceattas and stycas of the kingdom of Northumbria, and also in silver pennies of Edward the Elder from the early 10th century, as well as the issues of Æthelred II and Cnut which immediately preceded and followed the former's death in 1016. A textual chapter discusses and points to a resolution of the discrepancy in 9th-century Northumbrian chronology as presented by Norman historians and from analysis of the coinage. A later chapter reviews the evidence of documents, hoards and the analytical study of the surviving coinage for the dates and durations of its periodic renewal in the fifty years after its reform by Edgar c.973.

Covering the period 1390-1488, MacKay publishes the second portion of the Lord Stewartby Collection, the most important collection of Scottish coins ever put together by a private individual. Shortly before his death in March 2018, the collection was gifted to The Hunterian at the University of Glasgow. Comprising 5000 coins, the collection was formed between c. 1950 and c. 2010 by Ian Stewart, a banker and later a politician, initially as a Member of Parliament 1974-92 and from 1992 sitting in the House of Lords as Lord Stewartby. He was a highly regarded numismatist and the foremost scholar of Scottish coins in his generation. This exceptional collection has a depth and range across all metals and denominations which make it an important academic resource for researchers, whether numismatists or historians, or as a reference point for collectors.

During the early Middle Ages ^—^ when the Irish Sea became a melting pot of different cultures and a hotly contested political arena ^—^ the Isle of Man stands out as a unique and fascinating place, extraordinarily wealthy, and of considerable interest to scholarship for the impact of Scandinavian Viking culture. Chronicles and other textual sources are virtually silent on Man in this period, so finds of coins and other metallic objects represent a vital window into the economy of the island. In this volume, Bornholdt Collins catalogues the coin collection in Douglas and discusses a group of coins that was made on Man itself in the eleventh century. A system is revealed that used silver and other metals on a substantial scale, but in the form of bullion as well as coin, influenced by Anglo-Saxon England, the Danelaw, and the Viking Dublin.

The Lord Stewartby collection represents the finest collection of Scottish coins ever put together by a private individual. Now housed in the Hunterian at the University of Glasgow, it covers the entire history of Scottish coinage from the twelfth to eighteenth centuries. This volume, the third to be published, presents coins from the later reign of Alexander III to the death of Robert II (1280 to 1390). The Lenborough hoard is one of the largest finds of late Anglo-Saxon coins ever found, consisting of over 5,200 silver pennies of Æthelred II (978–1016) and Cnut (1016–35). It provides a unique insight into the currency of the early eleventh century, and the state and economy that produced it. This volume offers a full description of the hoard’s contents, giving information and images of every coin. It also presents a digested study of the hoard’s significance, drawing out the implications of the different types, mints and moneyers represented in it. The largest, latest element of the hoard is found to show a remarkable degree of die-linking: of coins made from the exact same dies or stamps, suggesting they have not been broken up between production and circulation. This conclusion offers important clues to the possible identity of the individual or group who originally owned and deposited the hoard. Taken as a whole, this volume offers a groundbreaking study into a single huge assemblage, with ramifications for all those interested in early medieval England and its neighbours.

The Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles aims to publish fully illustrated catalogues of British and Irish coins found in collections both at home and abroad, ranging from Ancient British issues to the seventeenth century, but covering Anglo-Saxon coinage in greatest detail. This Cumulative Index shows at a glance the vast range of material available in Volumes 21-40 of the Sylloge. In analysing the coin-legends by personal names (mainly moneyers but also rulers) and mints, and tabulating reigns, types, and find-spots, this volume brings in a great deal of new material. Especially important are the large corpora of tenth-century material from the British Museum, and the eleventh-century Danish dynasty coins from Stockholm.
