A major thrust of scientific concern in recent years has been the problems of documenting and conserving biodiversity and the establishment of systems of sustainable development. We do not even know approximately how many species in different groups of living organisms share the planet with us. The aim of this volume is to review the practical application of species concepts and appropriate technologies for as wide a diversity as possible of living organisms. It should be of interest to researchers/ postgraduate students in conservation, biodiversity, systematics, taxonomy, and evolution.

The arthropods contain more species than any other animal group, but the evolutionary pathways which led to their current diversity are still an issue of controversy. Arthropod Relationships provides an overview of our current understanding, responding to the new data arising from sequencing DNA, the discovery of new Cambrian fossils as direct evidence of early arthropod history, and developmental genetics. These new areas of research have stimulated a reconsideration of classical morphology and embryology. Arthropod Relationships is the first synthesis of the current debate to emerge: not since the volume edited by Gupta was published in 1979 has the arthropod phylogeny debate been, considered in this depth and breadth. Leaders in the various branches of arthropod biology have contributed to this volume. Chapters focus progressively from the general issues to the specific problems involving particular groups, and thence to a consideration of embryology and genetics. Arising from a joint meeting of the British section of the Society of Protozoologists, The Systematics Association and The Linnean Society which was entitled "Evolutionary Relationships Among Protozoa", this text notes improvements in methods for assessing genetic simliarity. These have led to great changes in scientific understanding of protozoan phylogenetics, and this book aims to bring together the contemporary view on the subject in order to provide a compendium of reference for those interested in the phylogenetics of lower eukaryotes. Opening the symposium, Andre Adoutte surprised many present by suggesting that the 18S rRNA phylogenetic tree of protozoa is probably unreliable. The reasons cited were mutational saturation of sequences and inequalities in evolutionary rates. Further evidence for this theorem was offered in the identification of the deeply incongruent trees that have been obtained using sequences from proteins and the genes which encode them. Some of the data pertinent to this is included in the reviews dealing with relationships among protozoa based on tubulin and on enzymes of central metabolism.It is also suggested in this text that the origins and evolution of organelles such as mitcochondria, plastids and hydrogenosomes are of central importance when considering protozoan phylogenetics. Additionally, the relationships between protozoa, fungi and animals are discussed in two of the reviews, and the authors conclude that animals and fungi each arose by radical transformation of uniflagellate choanozoan-like ancestors.
