What happens when Edward Schillebeeckx’s theology crosses paths with contemporary public theology? This volume examines the theological heritage that Schillebeeckx has left behind, as well as it critically assesses its relevance for temporary theological scene. In tracing the way(s) in which Schillebeeckx observed and examined his own context’s increasing secularization and concomitant development toward atheism, the contributors to this volume indicate the potential directions for a contemporary public theology that pursues the path which Schillebeeckx has trodden. The essays in the first part of this volume indicate a different theological self-critique undertaken in response to developments in the public sphere. This is followed by a thorough examination of the degree to which Schillebeeckx succeeded in leading Christian theology ahead without merely accommodating the Christian tradition to current societal trends. The third part of the volume discusses the issues of climate change, social conceptions of progress, as well as the evolutionary understandings of the origins and purpose of religions. The final part examines Schillebeeckx’s soteriology to contemporary discussions about wholeness.

Christiane Alpers discusses the contribution and role Christian theology plays in developing of the democratic life in post-Christendom societies. She discusses the three major approaches to this debate – public theology, Radical Orthodoxy, and post-liberal Protestantism – in order to illustrate the shared assumption that such an enhancement should be understood in terms of solving existing political problems. The volume builds on and combines public theology’s aspiration to craft a non-triumphant political theology, fit for a post-Christendom context, Radical Orthodoxy’s hesitancy to embrace secularism as neutral centre for present democracies; as well as post-liberalism’s Christocentric outlook. But Minch shows that Schillebeeckx's work reminds us of a 'new image of humanity', as well as a 'new image of God', part of the Catholic shift to a future-oriented 'theology of hope' that took place after the Second Vatican Council. These resist both economic logic and fundamentalist views of God and history that have become pervasive in popular notions of Christianity.

Robert J. Rivera critically engages the contemporary challenges of neo-liberal globalization. Concerned with the ways in which neo-liberal processes of globalization can, and do, exclude the most vulnerable, Rivera offers a Christology of liberation that is rooted in, and privileges, the lived realities of the excluded. This Christology is a critical resource that enables the excluded to resist, transform, and re-imagine globalization. In dialogue with the social sciences and decolonial philosophies, Rivera puts forward an account that is suggestive of the ways in which theologians can respond to contemporary challenges of injustice in our world today.

Marijn de Jong argues that the question of universality calls for a reconceptualized form of metaphysical theology, which he finds in the work of Karl Rahner and Edward Schillebeeckx. Casting a new light on these theologians, de Jong demonstrates that their methods contain a dialectical interrelation of hermeneutics and metaphysics – an interrelation which seemingly has been lost in more recent hermeneutical theology. Rahner and Schillebeeckx carefully balance particularity and universality without falling prey to relativist or absolutist ways of reasoning. Using a coordinated reading of Edward Schillebeeckx’s theology of creation and Theodor Adorno’s critical theory, Elizabeth Pyne shows that nature and politics are co-implicated sites of struggle against ideology and domination. In this analysis of the Thomist and Irenaean sources of Edward Schillebeeckx’s creation faith, God’s absolute saving presence to humanity is found to be intrinsic to his creative action. This becomes most explicit in God’s humanity in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lewis argues that Jesus is both God’s invitation to humanity and is himself the perfect human response to God. Because of this, Jesus' followers are called to be engaged in God’s saving action, by working to remove suffering from people and to build a better world in which all may flourish.Schillebeeckx’s theology is sometimes thought to divide into two disconnected halves, a pre- and post-Vatican II version. The way in which Schillebeeckx’s Christological soteriology has developed over his theological career, before and after Vatican II, is here examined using the Annales model of continuity and change. This book finds that Schillebeeckx both breaks with the language of Chalcedon while remaining adamantly faithful to the truth which it expresses. The final chapters discover how Schillebeeckx’s ideas and methods are crucially relevant in an analysis of contemporary social suffering in Ciudad-Juárez by Nancy Pineda-Madrid, and in the project of the Catholic Dialogue School in Flanders by Lieven Boeve.

Drawing upon Edward Schillebeeckx’s theology and Judith Butler’s philosophy, Adam Beyt uses the framework of nonviolent hope to construct a Catholic political theology responding to dehumanizing violence. Dehumanizing violence names words, institutions, or acts violating the inherent dignity of being made in the image and likeness of God. Theology can participate in dehumanizing violence by claiming an uninterrogated universality that marginalizes bodies due to their perceived differences such as gender, race, sexuality, or ability. The book’s constructive project integrates Schillebeeckx’s and Butler’s thought with queer theory and phenomenology to model embodiment as an “enfleshing dynamism” between bodies and signification. The text then posits Catholic discipleship as incarnating hope by defending the humanum, the new humanity announced through God’s Reign. Combining reflections from Schillebeeckx and Butler, this hope centers discipleship as nonviolent world building. Concluding with a sustained reflection with the writings of Franz Fanon and Walter Benjamin, the final chapter sketches a Catholic solidaristic response to contemporary struggles against the necropolitics of colonizing and state violence through assemblies of hope.
