This book provides insights into the practice of trance-based inquiry through arts-based research, serving as a beacon to guide the way to thresholds of ancient, yet novel, transmissions. Embedded in lived experience and theory, this book introduces the reader to the liminal space of place and trance-based inquiry processes entwined with creative artworkings. The interweaving of art, ritual, and trance-based inquiry opens sacred spaces for learning and unlearning that bring spirit into form. Each chapter presents examples from women artists and culminates with experiential practices drawn from the author’s decades of creative peregrinations to assist artists, teachers, and researchers in transmitting a conscious way of practicing and creating with trance.

This book focuses on critical walking and mapping practices through the research methodology of a/r/tography. Initially establishing seven global sites for employing movement-based research practices within culturally conceived a/r/tographic perspectives, the book builds upon and extends an international community of practice. The editors and contributors apply public pedagogy through a/r/tographic and critical walking inquiry, and explore how these forms may be engaged, understood and expanded globally. The chapters examine how a/r/tography and walking inquiry can be practiced, theorised, experienced, extended and conceptualised. The cartographic perspectives, theoretical positions and conceptual investigations included in this collection respond to the fundamental contemporary need for new and fresh models of teaching, learning and scholarship regarding global and local educational and social challenges. They offer tangible, aesthetic and rigorous examples for researchers, educators,community practitioners and research students to engage with a/r/tography and critical walking inquiry.

This book stories social movements on the margins. Foregrounding historically silenced, dismissed and ignored Aboriginal, young, voiceless, and intersex Australian activists, the book theorizes how movement away from exclusionary praxis at the margins can offer renewed hope. Using diverse and creative forms of research underpinned by storying, social movement and critical race theoretical  knowledge with  a commitment to social justice, this book will be of interest and value to scholars of cultural studies,  Indigenous studies, education,  human geography, political sciences, and sociology.

This book explores the relationship between the body, ecology, place, and site-specific performance. The book is situated within arts-based research, particularly within embodied inquiry and poetic inquiry. It explores a theoretical foundation for integration of these areas, primarily to share the lived experiences, poetry and dance which have come out of decades of sharing site-specific performances.

This book is an exploration of the concept of in-betweenness, as it occurs within the process of moving between the author’s root culture and adopted culture, from her perspective as an immigrant creative arts therapist. Through the critical autoethnographic voice and a/r/tographic inquiry, she introduces a unique exploration site within the process of Guqin-making, an ancient Chinese art form. Through the creation of images and poetry, and through Guqin-making and music-making/playing, the book expands the discussion of in-betweenness by re-theorising ancient Chinese philosophical perspectives on harmonic space. This contribution to arts-based research provides a unique standpoint to explore research methods of moving, walking, making, resting and awakening. It showcases how other researchers can transfer the invisible and intangible embodied feelings, memories and emotions arising from moving between two or more cultures into visible and tangible images, narrative, poetry, craft and music-playing to conduct powerful, interdisciplinary arts-based research.
