Understanding Teaching-Learning Practice – serie

As we have come to accept the duality of physical and virtual learning spaces as a permanent feature of our educational landscape, we begin to question its validity. Is this really a dichotomy, or is it a continuum? Should this be the primary dimension around which we cluster educational experiences - how does it intersect and interact with other axes, such as formal-informal, vocational-recreational, open-closed, teacher-student? How do we adapt, as teachers, learners, designers, policy makers, to this changing landscape? How do we shape it to offer an optimal learning experience? Such questions led us to conduct a series of academic and professional events on the theme of Hybrid Learning Spaces (HLS) - spaces which challenge and defy the dichotomies above. This edited book collates some of the products of that endeavor, offering a multi-vocal, interdisciplinary approach to hybridity in education. It connects practical examples, design directives and theoretical analysis, combiningperspectives from technology research and development, educational theory and practice, architecture and space and product design. This book addresses researchers, practitioners, innovators and policy makers in education, technology and design, offering broad perspectives and then distilling practical insights in the form of design principles and patterns, pedagogical models, and predictions of future trends.

The book Cultivating Future-Oriented Learners: Polyphonic Education in a Changing World offers a new theoretical and practical educational approach, responding to our era's challenges. The polyphonic paradigm it proposes uses current educational elements to produce "a new whole" connecting technology, varied learning spaces, humanizing pedagogy, and global values of personal, social, and environmental  responsibility.Combining all these elements, the presented polyphonic wisdom model enables teachers to design a technology-enhanced, pluralistic, and dynamic learning environment where individual voices are heard while all the voices harmonize. Centered around human dignity and affinity between the personal and collective good, it aspires to assist educators in cultivating productive and value-based future citizens and teachers within a democratic society.The book introduces thirteen unique teaching models to foster humanizing global values: diversity and inclusion, ecohumanistic responsibility, and a dialogue between diverse stands and perspectives. This book focuses on integrity throughout the PhD journey and beyond, and is organised around two main themes: (1) integrity in relation to the capabilities developed by doctoral candidates for professional practice; and (2) integrity and coherence at the PhD system level. The working methods of key participants such as PhD candidates, supervisors, university managers, government agencies and politicians are central to achieving integrity goals within PhD programmes. In this context, a number of constructs are developed that inform the practice-based elements of the book in relation to conducting doctoral research, research supervision, academic writing, and research training support systems; in particular, these include our Moral Compass Framework for professional integrity, notions of collective morality, decision-making when faced with ‘wicked’ problems, connected moral capability and our double-helix model of capability development, negotiated sense in contrast with common sense, completion mindsets and contexts, mindfulness, liminality, and mutual catalysis in joint authorship.While the data the book employs stems from practice-led research within the Australian doctoral system, the conclusions drawn are of global relevance. Throughout the book, wherever appropriate, comparisons are made between the Australian context and other contexts, such as the doctoral systems of the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Participating teachers strived, with the help of the researchers, to instigate a rich and authentic dialogue in their classrooms. The data shows that teachers were able to change their talk and interaction patterns, and this was followed by a desirable change in their students who started to talk more and expressed more complex thoughts.The book not only reports on a successful intervention, but most importantly investigates in depth the teacher experiences and ways of learning during the intervention project.

This book explores teacher well-being in light of the increasingly ethnically diverse profiles of schools and classrooms, focusing on socially and linguistically diverse teaching contexts. It draws attention to the socio-economic disadvantages that can often be characteristic of ethnically diverse classrooms, prior to examining and reviewing the interconnections between teacher well-being and the implementation of pedagogical processes in the classroom teaching and learning context.
