Unternehmerfamilien erleben Konflikte, häufig bedingt durch die Existenz des Unternehmens und dessen Einfluss auf die Familienkommunikation. Diese Konflikte stellen eine Gefahr für die Fortführung des Unternehmens und den Familienfrieden dar. Unternehmerfamilien haben aber auch eine Geschichte und einen kulturellen Kontext – beides beeinflusst mutmaßlich sowohl das Konflikterleben als auch die Versuche, diese zu managen. In der vorliegenden Studie werden Konflikte in indischen und deutschen Unternehmerfamilien verglichen, immer mit einer historischen und kulturellen Perspektive. Der direkte Vergleich dieser historisch bedingt sehr unterschiedlichen Familien bietet Familien aus beiden Ländern die Möglichkeit, bekannte und neue Konfliktumgangsmethoden zu reflektieren.

Entrepreneurial families experience partially severe conflicts among family members, often in connection with the role of the business in family communication. These conflicts threaten the continuation of the family business and peaceful family life. But, business families do not exist without context. They have a history and a cultural environment – both are influencing conflicts and conflict management methods. In the present study, conflicts in Indian and German owning families are compared, always with a focus on distinctive historical and cultural developments. The direct comparison of these historically seen very different family systems offers owning families in both countries connecting factors to reflect upon known and possible new conflict management methods.

This is the first systematic study of the succession process of Chinese family businesses which reveals what is truly happening during the time of hand-over. In explaining the features of the Chinese way of succession, special attention is paid to the transfer of social capital and guanxi, among other cultural and socioeconomic contexts, which could impact the behaviours and decisions of the family business stakeholders. Carefully selected 63 cases of family firms and the authentic words and experiences of the founders and their second generation are of high relevance in helping the readers to understand Chinese family businesses and their successions as well as to learn from their successes or failures.

Diese empirische Studie untersucht verschiedene Bedingungen und Faktoren, die die Langlebigkeit und den Erfolg von gemeinsam führenden Geschwisterteams in Familienunternehmen sicherstellen. Die Ergebnisse wurden aus 50 qualitativen Interviews mit 13 Familienunternehmen gewonnen. Die erfolgreiche und nachhaltige gemeinsame Führung eines Familienunternehmens mit mehreren Geschwistern kann als Königsklasse der Führung angesehen werden, da die Verwaltung der Familie mindestens genauso viel Aufmerksamkeit umfasst wie das Geschäft selbst. Neben der entsprechenden Diversifizierung von Qualifikationen, Kompetenzen und Persönlichkeiten, haben insbesondere die bewusste Entscheidungsfindung für das Geschwisterkonstrukt und die Akzeptanz eines asymmetrischen Konstrukts großen Einfluss auf dessen Erfolg.

This study empirically examines the dynamics of co-leading siblings in family firms. The findings were generated from qualitative interviews with 13 family firms of which nine are currently and four cases were once co-led by siblings. The research revealed that successfully and sustainably co-leading a family business as siblings can be considered as the king’s class of leadership as it includes managing the family layer with at least as much attention as the business layer itself. Besides diversifying in qualifications, competences, personalities and distribution tasks accordingly, processes such as the active and conscious decision-making for the business and at the same time for the co-leadership with other siblings are increasingly important to form a successful sibling team.
