Det intressanta med boken är att den ger tidstypiska bilder från enkla miljöer i förra sekelskiftets Dublin. Den har ett särskilt intresse då den skrivits av Joyce, som senare utvecklades till en av världens mest originella författare. Språket är lättillgängligt för att vara Joyce, ofta målande men ingenting av den inre spänningen som finns i Ulysses eller absurditeten i Finnegans Wake märks.
