Few moments in the history of psychoanalysis are as revealing as the years when D. W. Winnicott carried his most challenging ideas across the Atlantic and tested them before American audiences. Winnicott's Lectures in America offers a rare view of him not only as a theorist but as a visiting teacher introducing a distinct clinical vision to an American analytic landscape still shaped by Ego Psychology. Whereas The Collected Works of D. W. Winnicott (2014) presented his writings with European commentary, this volume turns to the United States to trace how his ideas were received, questioned, and gradually incorporated within American institutes during the 1960s.Drawing on accounts of lectures in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Topeka, New York, Boston, and Atlanta, the book reconstructs the intellectual climate in which Winnicott presented work that diverged sharply from prevailing models. His differences from contemporaries like Wilfred Bion and Anna Freud come into focus, as does the distinctive shape of his thinking on early development, dependence, and the clinical encounter.Several of the papers he delivered in the United States were at times too controversial for his London institute. Their reception abroad reveals both resistance and fascination, helping explain why his formulations on mothers, infants, and the facilitating environment continue to influence contemporary analytic and therapeutic practice. By situating these landmark lectures within the American institutions that first contended with them, this book provides a crucial comparative frame for understanding Winnicott's lasting impact in the United States and his enduring contribution to the study of early relational life.
