In The Tree of Life, Malick crafts images endowed with striking sentient agency that are, to different degrees, autonomous enough from character point-of-view to seem as if they are "looks without lookers." The film reveals and, at the same time, questions how fiction invites our imaginative investment by making an interior gaze visible. Tarkovsky's Nostalghia overlays the world of dream and memory upon the world of present experience, creating a shifting visual field in which nostalgia shows itself as atmosphere: ambiguous, permeating, and disorienting. Time, place, and memory braid in their constant contest with the desire for home, rest, and eternity.
