This authoritative guide enables accurate identification of the common components of the inshore benthic invertebrates of the British Isles and adjacent European coasts, as well as a substantial proportion of fish species. This new edition builds upon the strengths of the earlier work and is thoroughly revised throughout to incorporate advances in both the taxonomy and ecology of the organisms concerned.
Peter J. Hayward DSc., FLS began his career as Scientific Assistant at the Natural History Museum, London, and retired as Senior Lecturer in marine biology at Swansea University. Marine invertebrates have been his abiding interest, through many spring and autumn field courses, and practical laboratory exercises. He has published several books on marine biological topics, as editor, co-editor, author and co-author, and numerous scientific papers, especially on the marine Bryozoa. He has served as co-editor of the Journal of Natural History, and editor of the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, and is co-editor, with Dr John H. Crothers, of the Linnean Society Synopses of the British Fauna.

It is over 20 years since the first edition of this book was published. It covers the area from the Western continental shelf off Ireland to mainland Europe... I am sure this update will be welcomed by marine biologists both full-time and amateur.
