ROGER SCRUTON is an academic philosopher who has been Professor of Philosophy at Birkbeck College London and at Boston University, Massachusetts. He is a writer and journalist and has published over twenty books, including philosophy, political theory, criticism and novels.

Med udden mot laissez-faire
Konservatism som politiskt-ideologiskt begrepp idag är omgärdat av en viss förvirring. Dagens högerpartier har i regel tagit upp en laissez-faire liberal ideologi. Den icke-liberala högern har många gånger begränsats till diverse populistiska och extremnationalistiska yttringar.
Det i detta läge mycket intressant att läsa en bok som "The Meaning of Conservatism". Scrutons bok följer en kultur- och socialkonservativ linje. Genom boken kan man ana en mer eller mindre tydlig "udd" riktad mot de som tenderar likställa konservatism med en radikal marknadsliberalism.
Nyckelteman i boken är människans behov av sammanhang, lojalitet och kontinuitet. Bokens kapitel behandlar olika samhällsinstitutioner som ägande, marknad, demokrati, monarki, fackföreningar, nationalstat och annat ur ett grundläggande konservativt perspektiv.
