Tom Holland is an award-winning historian, author and broadcaster.    Imponerande bok, men...

   Tom Holland är samme extremt kunnige historieskrivare och samme skicklige stilist som skrev "Rubicon" och "Marathon" ( "Persian Fire" ). Hans analyser av kejsarna från Augustus t.o.m Nero imponerar och allt är mycket kunnigt och välskrivet. Men jämfört med konflikterna i "Rubicon", då den romerska republiken går under efter dramatiska konflikter med spännande huvudpersoner från Marius till Marcus Antonius, varefter Augustus gör något fint av det som finns kvar efteråt, är utvecklingen från Augustus till Nero en kurva som lutar nedåt, samtidigt som maktkampen mellan tungviktare som Pompejus och Caesar reducerats till palatsintriger mellan kejsaren, hans familjemedlemmar och mer eller mindre lojala medarbetare. Det vore roligare att se vad författaren kan göra med t.ex. år 69 och de fyra kejsarna.

   Kanske det bästa jag läst i historiegenren. Roligt OCH intressant. Man känner verkligen att man FÖRSTÅR skeendet, man känner sig upplyst och intelligent och småler hela vägen. Hollands lärda passion för ämnet smittar av sig och hans distanserade cynism kommer att underhålla dig även om dina förkunskaper om de gamla romarna skulle råka vara skakiga. Läs den för jösse namn!
