Dr. Lawrence R. Sipe is an Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Education of the University of Pennsylvania, where he is a member of the Reading/Writing/Literacy Program. He teaches courses in children's literature, ranging from picturebooks to young adult fiction, and his research interests focus on the responses of kindergarten, first- and second-graders to picture storybooks. He is the North American Editor of Children's Literature in Education.Dr. Sylvia Pantaleo is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in language and literacy, and in literature for children and adolescents. Her program of research has focused on exploring elementary students’ understanding, interpretations and responses to contemporary picturebooks, specifically literature with Radical Change characteristics and metafictive devices.
"Listening to the children is essential work. Not just because it inches forward our understanding of literacy learning, but also because it keeps us grounded in the facts of real books and real readers. The world has not really turned upside down, though one small corner of it has, and that in a most decisive and curious fashion. The writers assembled here under the watchful eyes of Sipe and Pantaleo have, on the whole, mapped out this corner pretty thoroughly..." -- David Lewis, Children's Literature Association Quarterly, 2008"This important book is a welcome addition to the body of scholarly writings that help us come to newer, deeper and ultimately better understandings of children’s literature."--Junko Yokota, Bookbird (October 2009), Vol. 47, No. 4: 60-61
