At the age of six I decided I wanted to be an artist. I graduated in Fine Art (Painting)in 1974. Having subsequently become disillusioned with my work, but by nowcompletely obsessed with the movies, I began programming independent cinemas in1977. Courtesy of Channel Four, I was able to begin making documentaries in 1983and have been an independent filmmaker ever since. In the intervening 35 years Ihave produced and/or directed over 80 arts documentaries for television andcontributed to over a dozen documentary series. I first worked with David Lynch in1993 while making a documentary about American independent cinema. In 1996 Ispent some time on the set of Lynch's Lost Highway and made a short film for theBBC about its making and meaning. That year Lynch and I also began workingon this book. I also worked extensively with the director David Cronenberg, makingtwo documentaries about his work (one in 1986 and another in 1992), as well asediting the book Cronenberg on Cronenberg for Faber and Faber. Unlike DavidLynch, I never returned to painting. He really told me off about that.

    Det är lätt att ha åsikter om den kanadensiske regissören Cronenberg, men betydligt svårare att inte ge honom cred för att utvecklat sin egen linje och tagit risk efter risk med sina märkliga projekt.

    I <i>Cronenberg on Cronenberg</i> befinner sig regissören i ett gemytligt och intressant samtal med filmaren Chris Rodley. Många av kringhistorierna till filmerna är riktigt roliga.
    Så som att Cronenberg blev erbjuden att Regissera "Top Gun" men att det då var meningen att Sylvester Stallone skulle spela huvudpersonen. Det är också intressant att läsa om regissörens uppväxt och hans planer på att bli vetenskapsman.
    Boken ger en mänsklig bild av en väldigt märklig regissör.
