It's warming. It's us. We're sure. It's bad. But we can fix it.

After speaking to the international public for close to fifteen years about sustainability, climate scientist Dr. Nicholas realized that concerned people were getting the wrong message about the climate crisis. Yes, companies and governments are hugely responsible for the mess we're in. But individuals CAN effect real, significant, and lasting change to solve this problem. Nicholas explores finding purpose in a warming world, combining her scientific expertise and her lived, personal experience in a way that seems fresh and deeply urgent: Agonizing over the climate costs of visiting loved ones overseas, how to find low-carbon love on Tinder, and even exploring her complicated family legacy involving supermarket turkeys.

In her astonishing, bestselling book Under the Sky We Make, Nicholas does for climate science what Michael Pollan did more than a decade ago for the food on our plate: offering a hopeful, clear-eyed, and somehow also hilarious guide to effecting real change, starting in our own lives. Saving ourselves from climate apocalypse will require radical shifts within each of us, to effect real change in our society and culture. But it can be done. It requires, Dr. Nicholas argues, belief in our own agency and value, alongside a deep understanding that no one will ever hand us power--we're going to have to seize it for ourselves.

Boken handlar för mycket om författarens privatliv. Glest med information om det som är bokens syfte, dvs hur vi ska klara klimatmålen. Jag rekommenderar Wütendes Wetter av Friederike Otto istället.

In "Under the Sky We Make", Kimberly Nicholas manages to tactfully summarize the climate crisis. With her elegantly simple framework -It's warming. It's us. We're sure. It's bad. But we can fix it - Dr. Nicholas convenes the seriousness of the situation with a balance of personal anecdotes and scientific references, while delivering a sense of agency to the reader. This is the book on climate I wish everyone would read.

The book stands out from other climate books in two main ways.

One, the honesty and personal stories through which Dr. Nicholas tells the story of how she tries to be human in a warming world. This is a book written by a brilliant academic just as well as by what by the end of the book almost feels like a friend. It is not written from an ivory tower, but from having two feet on the ground and an open heart. The book is relatable to me, as a human, in a way that scientific articles rarely are. It's accessible, approachable, and a spark of reflection to the person who has just started realizing the seriousness of climate (or have gotten stuck in a sense of cynical doom) just as well as it's for the climate scientist.

Two, Dr. Nicholas guides the reader from scientific facts on the climate crisis (without any sugarcoating, yet with personal touches and wit), to describing some major ways in which our societies maintains these unsustainable structures, finally ending up in delivering a message on how one as a reader can relate to all this - as an individual, as part of a community, as a citizen, and as a human. After all, isn't this the question we keep asking ourselves - how do we reduce our own harm, but also contribute to a better world? How can we do both, and not either or?

Dr. Nicholas writes that this book was written for her friends, and it shows. This is a book for humans. This is a book for *my* friends, for *my* family, and for me. By continuing from "it's warming, it's us, it's bad" to "we can fix it" in a personal and human language, Nicholas has written a book that I wish everyone would read. I cannot recommend it enough.

    Perfekt sommarläsning!

  3. 5/5 My S

This is a wonderful book: practical science at its very best. It's easy to read, full of personal stories, down-to-earth, practical, comprehensive - and funny. Buy, beg, borrow or steal a copy - I can't see you regretting it.
