    Om du känner dig nere eller till och med mycket nere, om du tycker att jobbet stinker eller att det är alldeles för dåliga program på teve, så kan du vidga perspektiven en aning genom att läsa Faktotum, Charles Bukowski's eländigt mörka men roliga berättelse om Henry Chinaski's (Bukowski's alter ego i romanen) hopplösa tillvaro. I korta drag kan man beskriva handlingen enligt följande: Henry får ett jobb, Henry får sparken. Henry får ett jobb, Henry får sparken... Henry dricker mer sprit och får ett nytt jobb, som otroligt nog är ännu värre än det förra och... så får han sparken igen. Och däremellan raggar han upp prostituerade kvinnor som han släpar med sig hem till sitt skitiga lilla hyresrum... Ordet Smuts får en helt ny innebörd efter att man läst romanen. Ändå finns det en värme och en medkänsla som pulserar genom det raka språket. Han berättar om ett liv som FINNS där ute, om människorna med dom underbetalda jobben, om fattigdomen, om desperationen... Och det är lysande.
