Beskrivning
How can we account for the religious, ethnic and cultural complexity of the late Ottoman Empire and Turkey? This open-access volume approaches this question by mobilizing the concept of ambiguityas a critical lens to examine identities, relations and everyday practices that resist neatcategorization. Attention to ambiguity opens up new modes of reading and sustains interdisciplinary dialogue. Organized around processes of conversion, Islamization and assimilation, the volume foregrounds individuals and communities, often described as hybrid, liminal, syncretic or heterodox. Through compelling case studies of the dönme, Kurdo-Armenians, Hemshinlis and Yezidis, as well as individuals with non-Abrahamic and agnostic orientations, the volume demonstrates that ambiguity is constitutive of negotiating identity and belonging in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. The eBook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. A theoretically and empirically cutting-edge volume on the rich diversity of late Ottoman and modern Turkey’s minoritised populations as they intersect, interact and negotiate with the hegemonic national, ethnic and Islamic majority. The contributors masterfully capture the cultural aesthetics of these minoritised populations with the innovative use of the concept of ambiguity as identities form and transform through the three social movements of conversion, Islamization and assimilation. A must-read for those interested not only in the Ottoman Empire, Turkey and the Middle East, but also in identity formation and negotiation among all minoritised populations across time and space.
