Ironically, one of the most the most complex British campaigns conducted in North America in terms of Native diplomacy, troop movements, and logistical coordination is also the least studied. In Spite of Friend and Foe by Ian Macpherson McCulloch offers the first comprehensive operational analysis of the much-neglected British campaign conducted on Lake Ontario and the Oswego and Niagara Rivers in July 1759.Drawing on extensive research in British, French, Canadian, and US archives, McCulloch takes readers on an in-depth journey of the campaign from its planning stages, through its execution, to its far-reaching consequences. The campaign is best known for the successful British siege of the French stronghold Fort Niagara and the defeat of a French relief force at the Battle of La Belle-Famille, but little notice has been taken of the role played by the Senecas and the rest of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy in ensuring the operations were successful.Throughout, McCulloch highlights the crucial roles played in the operation by American provincial forces and Haudenosaunee warriors. He also offers a frank reassessment of British operational commanders John Prideaux, Thomas Gage, John Stanwix, Sir William Johnson, and Amherst, as well as the Marquis de Vaudreuil, governor of New France. McCulloch shows that despite poor British synchronization of their operational capabilities, they still managed to achieve operational successes. Or—as Prideaux termed it— "in Spite of Friend & Foe."The British and Haudenosaunee victories at Niagara and during the Lake Ontario campaign may have long been relegated to footnotes in the larger narrative of the British invasion and conquering of Canada. But the campaign's critical role as a turning point in the war would ultimately coincide with a string of British military victories worldwide in 1759, the turning point of the larger Seven Years' War as well.

"McCulloch ranks among the greatest historians of the Seven Years' War in America. His contributions to our understanding of the conflict are immense, and this book exploring the French, British and Indigenous participants in the Niagara Campaign of 1759 is no different." —David Preston, author of Braddock's Defeat: The Battle of the Monongahela and the Road to Revolution"A major contribution… The study very successfully provides the first broad analysis of the campaign. Innovative in its approach, it brings an insightful critical analysis to the sources and provides a new and authoritative narrative and assessment of the campaign." —John Hattendorf, author of Trafalgar"This thoroughly modern account of the 1759 Niagara and Lake Ontario campaign is sure to become the standard source on this important topic. McCulloch is to be commended for combining cutting edge research with insightful (re)analysis of existing sources to change our understanding of Jeffrey Amherst, the British campaign, logistics, and much more. Highly recommended."—Mike Bechthold, Wilfrid Laurier University"Supported by research of such depth that it inspires confidence in the reader, Colonel McCulloch addresses the Niagara axis of advance in the 1759 campaign on the lakes and the rivers against New France, placing it within the wider strategic. tactical, and especially the operational levels of the French and Indian War. In doing so he has produced a work of military-historical analysis at its best, a pattern for subsequent studies."—J. A. Houlding"Fusing the judgement of an astute historian with the insight of a former professional soldier, McCulloch delivers an engaging account of the Lake Ontario campaign of 1759. Emphasizing the harsh operational realities of waging war in the North American wilderness, McCulloch offers a vigorous reassessment of events and protagonists. This important study restores an often-overshadowed campaign to its rightful place among the pivotal successes of the 'Year of Victories.'" —Dr. Stephen Brumwell, award-winning author and independent scholar
