Historical Dictionary of Paraguay

R. Andrew Nickson is Honorary Reader in Public Management and Latin American Development at the University of Birmingham with experience of teaching, research and consultancy on public administration reform, local governance, decentralization and reform of urban water supply. He had long-term work attachments in Sierra Leone, Nepal and Paraguay. He writes for the Economist Intelligence Unit, Oxford Analytica and Jane’s Information Group and is Associate Expert in Governance, UNDP Regional Service Centre, Panama and trainer for the Commonwealth Secretariat and United Nations System Staff College, Turin.

It is explained that many aspects of this tumultuous history have not yet been adequately studied, so that even now interpretations of the most important events are strongly contested. Although the book is inevitably dominated by politics, the author has devoted due coverage to economic, social and cultural life, with which he is well acquainted. . . .In spite of the title of the series, its volumes usually give a great deal of attention to the events and personalities of recent years, and this is no exception.
