New Guinea describes in archival photographs with accompanying detailed captions and chapter narratives the conflict between the Australian-American forces under General MacArthur in combating the tenacious Japanese first in Papua in 1942-43 and then along the entire northern coast of the world’s second largest island in 1943-44 to both isolate the Japanese bastion at Rabaul and pave the way for the American invasion of the Philippine Islands in 1944-45.

Jon Diamond has written extensively on military history topics, and in addition to articles for World War II History and Military Heritage he has authored books such as Orde Wingate (978-1-84908-323-2) and Archibald Wavell (978-1-84908-737-7). A graduate of Cornell University, Diamond is a medical doctor in private practice and has taught at Harvard and Penn State. He lives near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

As usual with this series it is packed full of good clear archive photos, giving an excellent insight into the campaign … The variety of the images is fascinating and the limited visibility of fighting in a jungle is obvious from so many of them.
