   En filosofisk klassiker

   History of Christian philosophy av Etienne Gilson , som gavs ut 1954, är fortfarande den mest uttömmande boken om medeltida filosofi, på samma gång encyklopediskt och djuplodande. Det är ingen överdrift att påstå att all forskning om ämnet idag tar sin utgångspunkt i detta verk, som i allt väsentligt håller än idag. Gilsons redogörelse sträcker sig från Justinus, martyren, till Nicholaus Cusanus och ger utförliga beskrivningar av tänkare som Origenes, Pierre Abelard, Albertus Magnus, Thomas av Aquino och Duns Scotus. Utöver att ge inblickar i enskilda filosofers verk, ger han en insiktsfull bild av hur idéer sprids över kulturgränserna. Han beskriver hur den grekiska filosofin fann sin väg in i den kristna filosofin för att stanna. I ett kapitel behandlar han de stora muslimska och judiska filosoferna, såsom Ibn Sina, Ibn Rushd och Moses Maimonides, och genom hela boken visar han hur hur de kristna filosoferna filosoferna läser och påverkas av dessa tänkare. History of Christian Philosophy är ingen lätt läsning. För den som är obekant med ämnet är det bäst att börja med andra översiktsverk. Men för den som bekantat sig något med ämnet och vill fördjupa sig i det mer på allvar, är Gilsons magnus opus oumbärlig.
