John Clendenning, professor of English at California State University, Northridge, is a well-known authority on Josiah Royce. He edited the standard collection of The Letters of Josiah Royce (1970).

“Using newly discovered Royce family materials, John Clendenning here brings the Josiah and Katharine Royce of his earlier biography into far more distinct focus. In particular, Josiah’s youth in California and his final years with Katharine are wondrously enriched. The result? Josiah Royce, America’s philosopher of genuine loyalty and community, finally receives that expert portrayal of his philosophy and biography which Americans urgently need and rightly deserve.”—Frank M. Oppenheim, S.J.
