Karch's Pathology of Drug Abuse

Dr. Steven B. Karch received his undergraduate degree from Brown University. He attended graduate school in anatomy and cell biology at Stanford University. He received his MD from Tulane University, did postgraduate training in Neuropathology at the Royal London Hospital and in Cardiac Pathology, at Stanford University. Dr. Karch is a Fellow of the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians London. He served as a cardiac pathologist at the Office of the San Francisco Medical Examiner, publishing a number of books and papers when he worked there. He is the author of over 200 papers and book chapters, most having to do with the effects of drug abuse on the heart. He has published 12 books and is at work on several more. His last two books, Karch’s Pathology of Drug Abuse, and Karch’s Drug Abuse Handbook are considered standard texts internationally and frequently cited by researchers worldwide. He was a Forensic Science Editor for Humana Press where he edited his own series. He was an associate editor for the Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine (former North American Editor), and the Journal of Cardiovascular Toxicology. Dr. Karch was elected as a Wellcome fellow to the Royal Society of Medicine in 1972 and is also a fellow of both the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences, the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME), and The International Society of Forensic Toxicologists (TIAFT).Olaf Heino Drummer AO, is a forensic pharmacologist and toxicologist from the State of Victoria, Australia and is employed currently as a part time forensic toxicology consultant specialist at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine. He is also an Emeritus Professor at Monash University and was formerly the deputy director (academic programs) at the Institute and head of the Department of Forensic Medicine, within the school of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University. He has been involved in the analysis of drugs and poisons and in the interpretation of their biological effects for over 50 years. He lectured widely on this subject and has given evidence in court in well over 250 cases around Australia and in New Zealand and has provided expert medicolegal reports in other parts of the world. He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed scientific papers in journals and has published many other reports, book chapters, and encyclopedia articles. He co-wrote with Dr Karch the 5th edition of Karch’s Pathology of Drug Abuse, was the main author of The Forensic Pharmacology of Drugs of Abuse, and coeditor of the e-book Forensic Analysis of Drugs. He is the editor for drugs and toxicology submissions for the scientific journal Forensic Science International and holds editorial board positions for a number of other scientific journals. His formal qualifications include a bachelor of applied science in chemistry from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (1974) and doctor of philosophy (med) from Melbourne University (1980). He is a member of a number of professional societies, including the International Association of Forensic Toxicologists (TIAFT), Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society (ANZFSS), the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (as chartered chemist), and a life member of the German Society for Toxicology and Forensic Chemistry. He also has the Alan Curry award for distinguished contributions to forensic toxicology (TIAFT 2016), Jean Servais Stas award from the German Society of Toxicology and Forensic Chemistry (GTFCh, 2013), Irving Sunshine award from the International Association of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology for Excellence in Clinical Toxicology (IATDMCT, 2005), and Australian Drug Foundation (ADF) award for Excellence in Alcohol and Drug Research (2000). He was awarded an Officer (AO) in the general division of the Order of Australia honor, January 26, 2019, for distinguished service to medicine in the field of forensic toxicology, to medical education and to professional groups.Fintan Garavan completed his PhD in Toxicology from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland in 1994. The subject matter was on theories in narcosis. He completed his medical training at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland in 1999 and his Surgical Pathology training in 2006. He completed Fellowships in Forensic Pathology at the Miami-Dade Medical Examiners Department from 2006 to 2009. He was awarded Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, London, by examination in 2010 and became a Fellow of the National Association of Medical Examiners, USA in 2012. He has worked in seven countries around the world and currently works as a forensic pathologist in District 10, Winter Haven, Florida. He provides expert testimony in matters related to death caused by drugs/toxins and or pathology/injuries.
