Social Work for the Real World

Social Work for the Real World explores how critical and decolonial theories can be applied in contemporary social work and human services. Grounded in Australian practice, it offers insights for practitioners internationally.Part A emphasises theory’s relevance in daily life and challenges the view of theory as having limited applicability outside the classroom. It also provides an overview of theories explored in the book, laying the foundation for theory as a tool that enables the pursuit of social justice within social work and human services. Part B exemplifies theory application with diverse community groups, challenging the western, normative approach to diversity in social work. It emphasises innovative practice opportunities arising from diverse perspectives, weaving personal insights into critical social work theories. Part C builds on the social justice narrative, exploring theory applications in diverse practice settings, including education, child safety, and government/non-government organisations. Real-life case studies illuminate daily practice challenges and ethical dilemmas to underscore theory’s pivotal role in decision-making across face-to-face, online and interdisciplinary contexts.Including reflective questions and further reading, this book highlights the exciting potential for theory to assist students and practitioners in Australia and beyond as they navigate the complexities of modern society.
