First published in 1952, Ceylon is a one-volume history of Ceylon, primarily intended for the non-Ceylonese reader who has no special knowledge of Asia. People, places, and dates have been kept to a minimum in the book. The focus has been on the evolution of a nation and the ideas which have influenced its growth.The volume outlines the history ranging from pre-historic period through independence in 1948. Beginning with a brief introduction of Ceylon and its people, the author discusses the arrival of the Sinhalese; Tamil invasions; Portuguese and Dutch period; the British conquest from 1795–1815; Kandyan War, Colebrooke Commission and Lord Torrington’s Administration; and the development, consolidation, and the struggle for independence.
