Beskrivning
MMA and the Spectacularisation of Violence presents a sociological analysis of the global development of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), one of the most rapidly growing sports worldwide.Drawing on an Eliasian/Bourdieusian sociological perspective, as well as original empirical research, this book examines martial arts and combat sports (MACS) as forms of institutionalised violence and asks what their development reveals about changing sensitivities to violence. The book introduces the historical development of MMA through the hybridisation of Eastern and Western combat styles and looks at regional and national idiosyncrasies —mainly in North America and Europe— as well as MMA’s revolutionary effect on the whole field of martial arts and combat sports towards more intense and spectacular activities. It explores the relationship between shifting balances in civilising–decivilising and formalising–informalising trends in society, and analyses how spectacularised violence in MMA intersects with gender and ethnic/racial power relations, as well as with contemporary political agendas. Paying particular attention to the ways in which MMA has become associated with forms of Western White masculinity and with broader struggles over identity, the book also examines the incorporation of MMA into right-wing political projects, as illustrated by the symbiotic relationship between the UFC and the Trump administration over the past decade or the increasing employment of MMA by far-right grass-roots organisations. This is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in martial arts, the sociology of sport, sport history, social theory or globalization.

"Raúl Sánchez García is one of the most influential scholars of combat sports today. This work on the rise of MMA, charting its rapid development within the global martial arts figuration, represents a fantastic achievement of social historical research. MMA does not exist in a vacuum, either with respect to comparable fighting sports or its socio-cultural and political-economic environments. This book charts the various interrelationships and interdependencies that have shaped the sport in the past, and which are likely to continue affecting it into the future. This is a must-read addition to the burgeoning field of martial arts studies."— Dr Alex Channon, University of Brighton (UK) and Chair of the Martial Arts Studies Association"A brilliant work from Raúl Sánchez García, an indisputable authority in the sociology of martial arts. MMA and the Spectacularisation of Violence offers a cutting-edge, extraordinarily timely analysis of the sport's evolution that reaches right up to the present day. Inspiring and deeply insightful, this book is an absolute must-read for anyone seeking to understand the intersection of violence, culture, and the modern MMA spectacle."— Dr Carlos Gutiérrez-García, University of León (Spain), Director and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Revista de Artes Marciales Asiáticas (RAMA)
