“Marina Zilbergerts offers a philosophically acute and exegetically perceptive reading of Genesis. The book's general argument -- that Genesis provides a model of human consciousness mirroring divine consciousness in its dense interiority which is beyond the capacity of AI – is compelling. This is a book that speaks through the Bible to a central dilemma of our own historical moment.”- Robert Alter, Professor Emeritus of Hebrew and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkeley, translator of the Hebrew Bible“Genesis in the Age of AI offers an original, thought-provoking, timely and profoundly humane take on the Bible that responds to the existential challenges posed by AI by calling for--and modelling--deepened self-awareness.”- Steven Weitzman, Professor of Hebrew and Semitic Languages and Literatures at the University of Pennsylvania“A groundbreaking work describing two distinct concepts of human consciousness: one played out in the book of Genesis, the other the contemporary claim that Artificial Intelligence provides us with a model of human consciousness that is reducible to the achievements of Large Language Models and neural networks. Zilbergerts demonstrates that the language of the Genesis narrative in the Hebrew Bible focusses on the subjective experience of God in the act of creation; and, by the same measure, on the inner world, the felt experience of biblical characters created “in the image of God.” In her perceptive and richly allusive reading, both divine and human creativity are founded on first-person subjectivity. It is this that constitutes the unique quality of the human, which cannot be reduced to the artificially intelligible achievements of the AI revolution. Zilbergerts’ work is a tour de force. She carries her considerable scholarship lightly, making detailed and always lively use of materials from philosophy, theology, Jewish biblical interpretation and the literature surrounding AI. This is a brilliant, rigorously analytical, and eloquently phrased argument for the role of the subjective, the implicit, and the irreducible in human experience. Original, readable and provocative at every turn. Highly recommended.”- Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg, Bible scholar, author of Genesis: The Beginning of Desire“A dazzling phenomenology of consciousness and an exciting new way of thinking about the image of God.”- Harris Bor, Theologian, author of Staying Human in the Age of AI“At a moment when artificial intelligence has made our familiar accounts of human uniqueness feel suddenly thin, this book offers a fresh reading of Genesis as an inquiry into what machines can imitate and what remains irreducibly human. Its treatment of consciousness, desire, perception, agency, and the divine likeness is erudite and bold, yet the book is written with a quiet confidence that wears its learning lightly, making it a pleasure to read.”- Moshe Koppel, Computer scientist, author, Professor Emeritus, Bar-Ilan University
