Gary W. Gallagher is John L. Nau III Professor in the History of the American Civil War at the University of Virginia, and author or editor of more than 30 books, among them Lee and His Army in Confederate History (2001) and The Confederate War (1997), as well as The Third Day at Gettysburg & Beyond (1994).
