Historical novelist Lindsey Davis is best known for her novels set in Ancient Rome, including the much-loved Marcus Didius Falco series, although she has also written about the English Civil War, including A Cruel Fate, a book for the Quick Reads literacy initiative. Her examination of the paranoid reign of the roman emperor Domitian began with Master and God, a standalone novel set in that dark period, leading to her new series about Flavia Albia.Her books are translated and five radio dramas are regularly rebroadcast on BBC Radio 4X. Her many awards include the Premio Colosseo (from the city of Rome) and the Crime Writers' Cartier Diamond Dagger for lifetime achievement.     I min bokhylla står 20 älskade volymer om den antike, romerske privatdetektiven Marcus Didius Falco. Lite orolig blev jag väl därför när upptäckte att han pensionerats, och att det nu var dags för adoptivdottern Albia att överta både hjälterollen och det skabbiga kontoret sex trappor upp på Fountain Court.
    Men när jag börjar läsa andas jag ut...
    Generationsskiftet går som smort. Här finns samma hårdkokta kvickhet som förr, samma urinstinkande gränder och marmorbestyckade lyxvillor, samma mustiga blandning av karaktärer (de opålitliga skitstövlarna såväl som de oväntat, nästa motvilligt sympatiska), samma doft av romantik och åsneskit, samma hejdlösa humor och sorgesamma realism. Och när den spännande upplösningen kommer kan jag inte lägga boken ifrån mig. Middagen blir en timme sen. Jag skulle kunna läsa 19 till.
    En sån tur att del nummer två, "Enemies at Home", redan väntar på mig i en orangefärgad papplåda där borta på OK. Alla ni andra inbitna Bokus-missbrukare vet vad jag talar om. Lilla julafton!
