Washington gained statehood on November 11, 1889, making it one of the newer states and yet, the land that comprises the Evergreen State has been inhabited for centuries. Long before Europeans came to North America, indigenous people were living here in present day Washington’s dense rich forests and coastal regions for at least 4,000 years.
