Beskrivning
Deported is dedicated to the experiences of tens of thousands of Jewish men, women, and children deported from the German Reich to occupied Eastern Europe from 1941 to 1945. Jews who remained in the German Reich were systematically deported, with an allowance for one suitcase and no time for closure from their previous lives. Before and during deportation, people wrote letters to relatives with encouragement, optimism, worry, and fear. These letters also reveal the events leading up to departure, the transport itself, and for some, survival in the ghetto. Most of the deported faced certain death at their destination, while others describe imprisonment conditions, and occasionally, escape and rescue.Andrea Löw collected hundreds of testimonies from German-speaking Jews (letters, diaries, photos, postcards, written and oral accounts) from archives across the world. She weaves these individual stories into a moving account of the Holocaust, with perspectives from those who were persecuted and no longer able to tell their stories. With Deported, the people now become visible as mothers, children, grandparents, as lovers, as young and old.
