    Beskrivning

Through engaging and original narratives, this innovative approach to teaching Egyptian Colloquial Arabic takes students on a tour of Egypt, exploring its diverse communities and linguistic richnessEgyptian Colloquial Arabic (ECA) is among the most commonly taught dialects of Arabic, reflective of Egypt's dominant role in Arab media and entertainment. This engaging and immersive new book is a celebration of Egypt’s rich social and linguistic culture, drawing on storytelling and narrative as a tool for language learning and cultural enrichment.Written for advanced and heritage learners, students visit six Egyptian locales: Nubia, Alexandria, Fayoum, South Sinai, and al-Sayida Zeinab in Cairo. Each of these six chapters is carefully structured around a narrative and accompanied by online audio and exercises to spotlight grammar, vocabulary, and regional variation, and to cement comprehension and language learning. It includes illustrations and an appendix to highlight key terms and expressions.Informed by ethnographic methodology, this book provides an in-depth exploration of Egypt’s diverse communities and is grounded in critical pedagogy to guide the teaching and learning of Arabic. It answers the call for education materials that reflect the local conditions on the ground, and can be used by instructors as a coursebook or as a supplementary resource.

    Recensioner i media

“Yawmiyat Bint Battuta fi-l-Mudun al-Masriya brings the multiplicity of the Arabic language into the classroom; it offers vivid, ethnographically grounded narratives that capture how people speak, joke, remember, argue, and belong. The authors have created something rare: a textbook that treats Egyptian Colloquial Arabic not as a single standardized code to be memorized, but as a living ecology of voices, registers, and identities. For Arabic courses, Middle Eastern Studies programs, and anyone who wants to move beyond the classroom into the cultural life of Egypt, this is the book that has been missing.”—Attia Youseif, Indiana University “Yawmiyat Bint Battuta fi-l-Mudun al-Masriya is an outstanding contribution to Egyptian Colloquial Arabic teaching and learning, bringing the language to life through authentic narratives that celebrate the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of communities across Egypt. By highlighting regional variations and meaningful language use, the book deepens learners’ linguistic proficiency and intercultural competence, making it an exceptional resource for Arabic language programs, cultural studies, and study abroad courses.”—Ayman Mohamed, Michigan State University“Spanning the gap between formal classroom lessons and the reality of the Egyptian dialect and culture is one of the biggest challenges in Arabic instruction. Yawmiyat Bint Battuta fi-l-Mudun al-Masriya genuinely solves this issue. By connecting language acquisition in reliable interactive media resources, real-world roleplays, and immersed cultural contexts, this textbook transforms the Egyptian linguacultural learning experience from a repetitive memorization into an active, communicative, and rewarding
