      Beskrivning

"Readers will be enchanted by these profiles in success and excess." — Publishers Weekly Fortunes and Fates—The Untold Stories of the World’s Richest WomenWhere wealth meets destiny, tragedy often follows.Heiresses have always dazzled with their unimaginable wealth, the cornucopia of fortune spilling opportunity at their feet. Yet, The World’s Wealthiest Women reveals through intimate historical biographies that the fates of these women were often woven with threads of tragedy by the weaving sisters of destiny.Gilded cages or golden destinies? Whether these women amassed their billions through inheritance, marriage, or sheer ambition, their vast fortunes shaped lives that were anything but ordinary. From the author of Behind Every Great Man, The World’s Wealthiest Women unveils the stories of women destined for privilege through birth or marriage, only to face lives rivaling the sorrows of Russian tragic heroines. These are the nonfictional Richard Corys—women whose silver spoons often rusted, far from happily ever after. Hetty Green: Known as “The Witch of Wall Street,” her wealth rivaled the Gilded Age’s Robber Barons, but her miserly ways outshone even Scrooge.Helena Rubinstein: From a Polish shtetl to the throne of a global cosmetics empire, this diminutive giant redefined beauty and power.Evalyn McLean: Her Great Dane once roamed her mansion with the Hope Diamond on its collar, a glittering symbol of her opulent yet cursed life.Basia Johnson: A Polish refugee maid turned mega-rich heiress, her rags-to-riches tale inspires, though not without its shadows.Honey Sheran: Married to pharmaceutical titan Barry Sherman, her sweet life ended in tragedy as Canada’s tenth-richest couple fell victim to a double homicide.Wendi Deng Murdoch: Fleeing China’s Bamboo Curtain, she secured a fortune through marriage to media mogul Rupert Murdoch, crafting a life of limitless horizons.Clare Bronfman: Heiress to the Seagram fortune, her $100 million gift to NXIVM led to a six-year, nine-month prison sentence for her role in the cult. The World’s Wealthiest Women is a riveting exploration of privilege, power, and the poignant realities behind the fortunes.

      Recensioner i media

"I love women’s stories, non-fiction and memoirs, and tales that inspire so I am a dedicated fan of Marlene Wagman-Geller’s amazing work. Just when I think I have read my favorite book of hers, she writes another one that becomes a favorite and captures my interest and most importantly my heart. Her latest The World’s Wealthiest Women is filled with professionally researched facts along with the most fascinating tidbits all told in the author’s unique fashion and entertaining voice. This book explores the lives of twenty-five women from businesswomen to heiresses and there is something here for everyone. The readers learn behind the scenes secrets and stories of unbelievable, yet true wealth that these women obtained, created, and lived with. Many still do today. I have to say, The World’s Wealthiest Women is now my favorite Marlene Wagman-Geller’s book."—Laura L. Engel, Author of You’ll Forget This Ever Happened-secrets, shame, and adoption in the 1960’s"In this, her twelfth book, Marlene Wagman shows that she is still the reigning advocate for forgotten, misunderstood, or misrepresented women.  With its rags-to-riches stories of scrappy entrepreneurs, women who married into wealth, and women who were born rich and got richer, this book is almost impossible to put down."—Laurel Corona Weeks, author of The Mapmaker’s Daughter"Engaging writing, intriguing characters, and well-placed humor bring to life this collection of stories about The World's Wealthiest Women, the latest in Marlene Wagman-Geller's acclaimed series on notable women. Through meticulous research, Wagman-Geller offers intimate glimpses into the extravagant lives of international heiresses and wildly successful businesswomen, delivering stories that delight, entertain, and illuminate the fascinating world of women of extraordinary wealth. "—Judy Reeves, author of When Your Heart Says Go"Wagman-Geller has done it again—delivering another dazzling collection of mini-biographies brimming with fabulous and fascinating women. Some built their fortunes from nothing, while others inherited wealth or gained it through marriage, but all lived lives that astound the imagination. With vivid detail and powerful prose, she sweeps readers into opulent worlds where extravagance reigns. A page-turner from start to finish, this book is as irresistible as it is unforgettable."—Jill G. Hall, author of On a Sundown Sea: A Novel of Madame Tingley and the Origins of Lomaland"How did I not know about these women? This was the question that kept going through my mind as I finished each chapter and began a new one in a much more rapid succession than I had initially planned. A chapter a night was my thought as I began “The World’s Wealthiest Women,” because each chapter is a self-contained biography. Instead, I quickly amended my plan to half the book and I had it finished in two nights. In all honesty, the lives of these wealthy women were what I had anticipated. Many of them struggled initially with poverty and family tragedy, either self-made or awarded to them by fate. What all these women had in common was chutzpah, or as other cultures would say, gumption, but I don’t want to give their amazing stories away. As stated, I had never heard of the existence of many of these women. For example, who knew about Hetty Green or Madame C.J. Walker? Although I’m sure many of us have heard the names Imelda Marcos, Athina Onassis, or Soraya Khashoggi, it was fascinating to know more about them and how they handled their inherited wealth. Many of us have daughters, and granddaughters who are growing up, and will assume positions of responsibility, power, and perhaps wealth. I think books like these are important for them to have access to. As I stated, I didn’t know about these women, but I’m glad I do now. Marlene Wagman-Geller has authored a collection of books about the lives of women that provide important information and are also thoroughly enjoyable to read.  cannot wait to pass them on to my granddaughter, who turned five this year, when she gets a little bit older. Then there’s my grandson, who will read them, too. You can trust me on that one."—Lynne Marino, author of Third Time’s a Charm: Romance Over 50."Reading Marlene Wagman-Geller’s new collection of biographies provides delightful glimpses into the lives of fabulously, eye-poppingly, staggeringly wealthy women. From a tale of a self-made girl-boss to a gossipy piece on a silver-spoon heiress, each bon-bon of a story can be read in a sitting. However, Wagman-Geller’s quirky, tongue-in-cheek writing style–reminiscent of a Dorothy Parker quip or a Hedda Hopper gossip column–will tempt you to indulge in just one more. If you can’t live like the diverse, rich, and famous women profiled, you can, at least, peek into their histories. Hours of vicarious indulgence here. Fascinating and fabulous!"—Shelley Burbank, author of Final Draft: An Olivia Lively Mystery"Marlene Wagman-Geller has written another gem! The World’s Wealthiest Women: Fascinating Biographies of Heiresses, Royals, Entrepreneurs, and Entertainers is extraordinarily fascinating. Wagman-Geller’s way of writing these mini-biographies packs so much in such a small space. I felt like I got to see these women in a more vulnerable way. I stayed completely invested from start to finish!"—Rachael Wolff, Podcaster and Author of Tending Your Inner Garden and Letters from a Better Me
