Approved by the author, Ren Louie, and translated by TRANSLATOR.With the intention to assist in language preservation while making cultural stories more accessible to Indigenous Peoples, this series of translated books promote the learning of Indigenous languages for all ages with the help of popular and familiar stories.When he is gifted a handmade drum by his mother, Ren learns the teachings of the drum that she also passes down to him. Ren discovers that through this special drum, he is able to connect to his culture and find confidence in his voice to joyfully share in singing the traditional songs of his Nuu-chah-nulth Nation.

Ren Louie is Nuu-chah-nulth from Ahousaht and his traditional name is Wikinanish, which translates to ‘eldest son’. He comes from mixed Nuu-chah-nulth, African American, and Ukrainian heritage. With his background in Indigenous Studies and his work as an Aboriginal Role Model in schools, he hopes to one day teach Indigenous Studies at the post-secondary level. Ren is passionate about his language and culture and enjoys learning new songs and traditional teachings from Elders and Knowledge Keepers in the Indigenous community.Karlene Harvey is an illustrator and writer, and she lives on the unceded and ancestral home territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh people. She is Tsilhqot’in through her mother and Syilx through her father, both sides of her family include a mix of European ancestry. She studied visual art at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and completed a Master of Arts in English Literature from the University of British Columbia. Karlene is passionate about diverse representation in her illustrations and believes that Indigenous storytelling is a powerful form of knowledge sharing and change making.
