      Beskrivning

In the course of almost a century, European jazz musicians not only produced a corpus of work worthy of much wider appreciation, but also adopted strategies to adapt to the varied reception that the music evoked, which ranged from joyful acceptance to outright prohibition, the latter often involving survival and protest in equal measure. As the first organic overview of the history of jazz in Europe and covering the subject from its inception to the present day, the volume provides a unique, authoritative addition to the musicological literature. Entries are written in a narrative style and are presented on a country-by-country basis. Each article is authored by a jazz history specialist from the specific country who contextualizes the music in the cultural landscape of that country, discussing the most influential figures of its development, and referencing the sometimes considerable literature available in the national language. This unprecedented pool of authors makes much of this information available in English for the first time. Further chapters cover related subjects: the history of African-American entertainers before jazz, the cross-national traditions of Gypsy and Jewish music, festivals, films, and avant-garde music. The book also draws on the newly available resources created by the extensive work being done nationally by various jazz archives. Chapters contain in-depth bibliographies, rare photographs and illustrations and suggested listening lists. Supported by the Europe Jazz Network with funding from the Creative Europe programme of the European Union, this volume will serve as an inspiration for new generations of listeners and musicians.

      Recensioner i media

"This book will become a valuable resource for musicologists and audiophiles worldwide. It provides healthy, well-researched speculation about the American jazz narrative and canon. This book benefits not only from recent research on American jazz, but also the use of archival holdings worldwide, and recent translations of jazz research in different countries. . . . The History of European Jazz will be a valuable addition to any scholar's library. Its 753-page count give the impression that it is the definitive book on European jazz, but each author illustrates that we are only at the beginning of truly understanding the global impact jazz has had on musicians and how the music spread across the world." --Kevin Fullerton, ARSC Journal "This title on European jazz is divided into eight parts, each subdivided by country, with a ninth part dedicated to themes. Each entry is written by a scholar from that country, and sometimes translated from the original language to English. Aided by an extensive index, readers can easily select and explore geographic regions or topics. While entries differ in length and depth, each ends with a bibliography, suggested listening lists, and often related websites and publishers or associations, providing an opportunity for further study. Editor Martinelli, a jazz promoter, journalist, lecturer, and author, intelligibly places this volume in the context of previous writings on European jazz, detailing how this selection fills gaps. VERDICT Great for classrooms, libraries, and scholars, this work opens the door for anyone interested in jazz in Europe from its inception to the present and is a strong starting point for further research for scholars seeking to contribute to the field." --Elizabeth Berndt-Morris, Loeb Music Lib., Harvard Univ., Cambridge, MA, Jan 02, 2019
