An Important Awakening
I wasn't ready for this when I picked it up. I'd heard Dr. Mate speak on YouTube, and had an idea of the subject the book covered, but it still took me quite off guard. Dr. Gabor Mate (writing with his son Daniel Mate), tackles subjects that touch each and everyone of us. It is easy to take the more recently emphasised subject of "trauma" and "inner child dynamics", shrug your shoulders and conclude it doesn't apply to you. Dr. Mate takes you by the hand and delves into the concepts giving you no room to escape the finding that you've been personally affected in some way, notwithstanding your seemingly "happy" childhood. Stepping back, the book tackles topics we take for granted in our daily lives; issues we probably don't stop to notice. He queries whether these are indeed "normal". From medicine, to obstetrics, to capitalism, to social media, he invites us to take a look at how we live our lives today and consider if we've lost the plot. A personal favourite was when a midwife brought to his attention that labour while lying on ones back with legs up in the air was most unnatural with the quip: "try taking a large dump in that position!" (Reworded by me) If something as straightforward as a field of medicine may have things wrong, what else out there needs re-thinking!? The book is rather big, and I was initially concerned that it would take me a lifetime to get through it, but the font is large and the reading an easy go. Stories from real life experiences make the telling engaging, and there are points to pause and consider scattered throughout the read. I would be remiss not to mention the cover art that I thought was just brilliant for the otherwise weighty content.
