George Moore (1852-1933) was an Irish writer of novels,poetry, plays and art criticism. His first ambition was to bea painter, and he spent much of the 1870's in Paris, wherehe came to know many of the leading figures in art andliterature.Walter Sickert (1860-1942), of mixed Danish, German andEnglish blood, became one of the most powerful followersof Degas in England, and an important link betweenImpressionism and Modernism. He also wrote muchimportant art criticism.Anna Gruetzner Robins is Professor of History of Art at theUniversity of Reading. She was co-curator of `Degas, Sickertand Toulouse-Lautrec: London and Paris 1870-1910', 2005and editor of `Walter Sickert: The Complete Writings onArt', 2000.
