Trimmed Lamp

Nancy the shopgirl and Lou the factory hand share a New York room and different bets on luck, opening a volume of Manhattan stories that end on a twist. Rent, a hat, elevated trains, and clerks and girls caught in the week's wage become ironies with a last-line punch. Urban comedy of work and wanting: everyday people heard as cases the city springs on them.
