Clifford Guard was born in 1923, in the South Wales city of Swansea, into a life of abject poverty. By age 15, he sought escape through joining the merchant navy, and acted on an imperative from his father to reach America where he could forge a different future.When the Second World War broke out, he joined the US Army's 3rd Armored Division, where he was nicknamed ‘Limey’ by two friends he’d endured battle with — Trix and The Greek.
