Alena Mornstajnova's gripping novel, which is based on real events, has won numerous awards and been translated into over a dozen languages across the world.

Three young women and the extraordinary Madam Lilla embark on a road trip from Tunisia to Lebanon as the Arab Spring breaks around them. The novel's title is taken from a sura in the Koran that warns to beware of those 'women who blow on knots' because they do witchcraft. The women all set out for different reasons but each holds a secret that drives them forward. It is only as they travel further across the desert that Madam Lilla's dark intentions become clear and their quest begins hurtling towards an unimaginable end.Unique and controversial in its country of origin for its political rhetoric and atypical Muslim female characters, Ece Temelkuran weaves an empowering tale that challenges us to ponder not only the social questions of politics, religion and women in the Middle East, but also the universal bonds of sister- and motherhood.

This book is a celebration of bygone times, in the modern history of the domestic game. It is also a tribute to the richly appreciated efforts of the overseas stars in their matches with Glamorgan. The Celtic fervour and uninhibited displays of nationalism, especially in the matches at the St. Helens ground in Swansea, meant that there was an additional dimension to the matches between Glamorgan and the touring teams, in the words of Richie Benaud, the great Australian captain - and later the world-famous broadcaster - who said, "this match with Glamorgan is like an extra Test in our series on tour."The memories and records here also commemorate the end of cricket at St. Helen's which, ever since its creation in 1875, had seen the game co-exist with rugby. But the summer of 2025 is the last before the pitches where Glamorgan defeated the 1936 Indians, the 1937 New Zealanders, the 1951 South Africans, both the 1964 and 1968 Australians as well as the 1971 Pakistanis, disappear as part of a multi-million-pound redevelopment scheme for regional rugby. For those living in Wales, as well as Welsh folk exiled elsewhere, the disappearance of the St. Helen's cricket ground at the end of the 2025 season is a moment to reflect on the good times, remembering sunny afternoons sat enraptured as the likes of Wilf Wooller, Tony Lewis, Don Shepherd and Alan Jones locked horns with the Test Match stars whilst wearing the daffodil sweaters of Glamorgan.

Now he has had a stroke, and his son, Matthew, a lecturer at Oxford, returns to the close-knit community that he left. As Harry lies in silent pain in his cramped bedroom, Matthew experiences the jarring familiarity of the childhood world which, alienated, he can no longer re-enter. Struggling with the unspoken tensions and losses that returning home has provoked, he recalls what has made him who he is. Upstairs his deeply thoughtful father recalls his own arrival in the village, the relationships between men during the General Strike, and the social and personal changes that followed, and he struggles to articulate all that has been left unsaid. One of Merthyr’s Victorian brickyard girls, Saran watches the world parade past her doorstep on the banks of the stinking and rat-infested Morlais Brook: the fair-day revellers; the chapel-goers and the funeral processions. She never misses a trip to the town’s wooden theatres, despite her life ruled by the 5 a.m. hooter, pit strikes, politics and the First World War that takes away so many of her children. Her Glyn will work a treble shift for beer money; her brother Harry is the district’s most notorious drinker and fighter until he is ‘saved’. The town changes and grows but Saran is still there for Glyn, for Harry, for her children and grandchildren. In his 1935 novel Black Parade, writer, soldier and political activist Jack Jones creates a superbly riotous, clear and unsentimental picture of Merthyr life as his home town reels headlong into the twentieth century.

This book brings together a selection of the writings of John Tripp, a figure deserving of critical attention and a continued readership. John Tripp (1927-1986) was one of the leading literary figures in Wales. Poet, short story writer, and journalist, he was an outspoken and often controversial writer whose passion and vigour often spilled over the pages he wrote and into his life. Charming, abrasive, lyrical and satirical, John Tripp had a chameleon genius which enlivened the literary life of Wales for nearly three decades. The Meaning of Apricot Sponge is essential reading for anyone concerned with Wales and the roots of its contemporary identity.
