St Ebbe's stands in the city centre between Pembroke College and the Westgate Shopping Centre. Its physical location between the city and the university is reflected in its life and congregation.Julia Cameron gives an overview of its 1300-year history, highlighting developments from its medieval beginnings to its 21st century gallery and new main entrance. We read the stories of five of its leaders, each bringing a deep influence on the life of the church. One, Edward Penrose Hathaway, is described as a man with singular influence on the evangelical bias of Oxford's city churches. His own story (his wife died by drowning) is full of pathos.C S Lewis entered the university when all students were required to pass 'Responsions' - papers in mathematics and Classics. Lewis was weak in maths and failed the exam. He was tutored by the mathematician John E Campbell, a longstanding member of St Ebbe's.The proctors forbade students from coming to St Ebbe's during Gladstone's time, as the permanent curate, Henry Bulteel (whom Gladstone admired) was a strong Calvinist in his leanings.The parish was largely a slum area, with gasworks built there in the nineteenth century which exuded the smell of gas and a low-level 'din'. Open drains in the area caused three outbreaks of cholera.
