This is an unusual book, gathering wisdom on leadership from around the world, across a century. The material has been curated for its quality, and its reach. It will stretch the minds of younger leaders to help them see what they could do; and help them to think in new categories. The material is profound, but all lucidly expressed. It would be as accessible to an undergraduate student as to a pastor or business leader. The Appendix on good governance comes at a time when sad stories of poor governance have had detrimental effects on the ministries or publishing houses they are meant to have protected. This is unique to our knowledge. We trust it will enable trustees and board members to better understand their roles, and to be able to call out bad practice.

This is a book for our times as Pol Pot's lust for control in Cambodia has been re-enacted over and over again by Putin, Assad, Kim Jong-un, the Ayatollahs...While Cambodia is best known for Angkor Wat and tourism, its enchantment hides a recent history and a poignancy beyond imagining. In the mid-1970s, starting with political, military and religious leaders, the entire nation was turned into a death camp.Don Cormack entered Phnom Penh five months before its fall to the Khmer Rouge in April 1975. He mastered the language, and worked in the border refugee camps for years after the nation fell. As he spoke Cambodian fluently, he is able to give voice to Cambodians themselves. Here in this book, the only one of its kind, we hear first-hand accounts of endurance and faith under one of the most barbaric regimes in modern history. The book opens with the early beginnings of the Protestant Church in 1923. From here Cormack traces the lives of several families up to, and through, the genocide under Pol Pot, and then on to the present day.How did the mass torture, and mass killing start? Paris-educated Pol Pot and his bourgeois colleagues returned to Cambodia as Marxist zealots, and in April 1975 declared 'Year Zero'. Inspired by Mao's Cultural Revolution and Red Guards, they formed the Khmer Rouge, setting in motion the auto-genocide of the 'Killing Fields'.Here we gain a wide sweep across decades of turmoil, while drilling down into personal stories of courage and resolve, of epic journeys, of survival; of finding the Way, the Truth and the Life.At the time of publication only one of the Khmer Rouge leaders is still alive, in prison in Phnom Penh, now aged 93. He remains defiant. Astonishingly, the story is also told (first broken by the Far East Economic Review in 1999) of Comrade Duch, the chief executioner, becoming a Christian in the early 1990s and being baptised. He was personally responsible for the torture and liquidation of tens of thousands. He remained faithful to Christ, and died in 2020 in prison, with a Bible and a hymnbook beside his bed. Cormack tells of his own meeting with Duch, unawares, in a refugee camp.Index, Timeline, and three Photo Galleries. This is the eighth and final edition of a contemporary classic. It is beautifully written.

Living in Love and Faith (LLF) is a set of resources produced by the bishops of the Church of England to help Christians discern God's will on the issues of 'identity, sexuality, relationships and marriage.' As those in the Church of England engage with these resources, they need to know the answers to two key questions about them. What do the LLF resources contain? What are we to make of them theologically? This book gives a detailed answer to both questions. It explains the background and content of the LLF material and then goes on to explain why this material fails to provide the teaching that Christians in the Church of England need if they are to live out their calling to be a distinctive people who act as salt and light in the midst of the idolatry of contemporary Western society. The book concludes by outlining how 'biblically grounded Anglicans' should engage with the Next Steps process following on from LLF. Finally, there are FAQs.Foreword by Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali

These ten stories are 'powerful, riveting, compelling, even overwhelming'. They come straight from the Christian believers who endured one of the most brutal periods of mass killing in modern history. Here we glimpse profound spiritual truth through their lives, courage and faithfulness. They are stories for our own times, as evil tyrants continue to emerge. Includes photos, timeline and maps.

As well as death in old age, chapters cover miscarriage, death from road accidents, and talking with children about death. There are also practical chapters which include making a Will; making an Advanced Decision (whether you want to be resuscitated if your heart stops) and other questions we should be aware of. It is a book for adults at any stage.

Is it theologically possible to hold that God's blessing can rest upon sexually-active same-sex relationships and same-sex marriages? Is it therefore legitimate for the Church of England to bless them? This study carefully examines the papers on blessing by Walter Moberly and Isabelle Hamley, produced for the Church of England's General Synod in July 2023, then explores the pattern for God's blessing, as found in Scripture. The principles are more widely applicable.Martin Davie concludes that if such prayers of blessing were to be authorised, it would mean deciding that God's rejection of same-sex unions no longer applies.

For a board to bring insight and foresight, what facets of wisdom and experience are needed? How should new members be selected? How will financial and theological integrity be guarded? How does the board best work in partnership with the CEO and senior staff? These seven rules are gold. There is no eighth rule, but you can't get by on six.'Full of seasoned wisdom. St Ebbe's stands in the city centre between Pembroke College and the Westgate Shopping Centre. Its physical location between the city and the university is reflected in its life and congregation.Julia Cameron gives an overview of its 1300-year history, highlighting developments from its medieval beginnings to its 21st century gallery and new main entrance. We read the stories of five of its leaders, each bringing a deep influence on the life of the church. One, Edward Penrose Hathaway, is described as a man with singular influence on the evangelical bias of Oxford's city churches. His own story (his wife died by drowning) is full of pathos.C S Lewis entered the university when all students were required to pass 'Responsions' - papers in mathematics and Classics. Lewis was weak in maths and failed the exam. He was tutored by the mathematician John E Campbell, a longstanding member of St Ebbe's.The proctors forbade students from coming to St Ebbe's during Gladstone's time, as the permanent curate, Henry Bulteel (whom Gladstone admired) was a strong Calvinist in his leanings. The parish was largely a slum area, with gasworks built there in the nineteenth century which exuded the smell of gas and a low-level 'din'. Open drains in the area caused three outbreaks of cholera.

A walking tour of Oxford and Cambridge, showing the main Reformation sites. Includes a Timeline, helpful introduction, and Appendices. It is a unique publication, giving users a good grasp of one of the most pivotal periods in English history.

This fresh re-telling of the Easter story from the Last Supper to Calvary brings many new insights. The intrigue and betrayal in the air as the disciples ate; the fierce, costly love shown by Christ in Gethsemane, as his disciples slept; the illegal and unjust kangaroo court in the middle of the night; the drama of the earth becoming dark and quaking as the Son of God died. Read the story anew, as told and interpreted by this pastor-theologian. Questions included for personal reflection or for group discussion.

Generosity is part of the Christian life. And the money we give has to be looked after with integrity. The apostle Paul teaches on both these aspects of handling money. Money is a risky business, always with temptation.John Stott looks at the Apostle Paul's teaching (1 Corinthians 16 and 2 Corinthians 8,9) on Christian giving. How do we decide what to give? Is it ever right for our giving to go down, if circumstances change? For general use in church life, or with particular reference to a giving appeal or building project.Chris Wright takes the same passages, and opens out the Apostle's teaching on how to handle money with integrity and transparency. For Treasurers or for anyone who is responsible for special appeals. We are not aware of any other publication which does this job.Questions included for personal reflection or for group discussion.

A critical book for anyone in ministry who wants to run the race well, and keep running to the end. Pablo Martinez is a psychiatrist who has helped many people in ministry. For church leaders, church apprentices, student workers, staff of mission agencies. Questions included for personal reflection or for group discussion.

Charles Simeon of Cambridge was captured in silhouette by the world-famous silhouette artist, Augustin Edouart. This unique concertina of the silhouettes is available for framing. Each is named, and they carry the signature of the silhouettes as part of the design.

This is a charming book, describing, in the words of Chris Wright, 'one of the greatest partnerships in church history.' It is a story which John Stott himself hoped would one day be told.It is widely agreed that Stott could not have been half so effective without Frances Whitehead at his side. He invited her to become his Secretary when she was still a young Christian, at that time working for the BBC. Having done secret war work as a mathematician, she brought a good mind as well as determination. Stott relied on her, and she would shoulder responsibility to work on the infrastructure to establish his ideas. She also typed his 50 books from longhand. They are both described (by one of the succession of young graduate Study Assistants) as 'fast, exacting and determined', with Frances matching Stott's gold standard again and again. 'She was as remarkable in her way as John Stott was in his.' They were good friends, and she was named in his Will as 'My friend and Executor'. Neither married and both were completely dedicated to John's ministry. You can't understand his ministry without knowing of Frances Whitehead. This is a very colourful biography looking at Frances Whitehead's ancestry as well as her own interesting life. It includes walk-on parts from George III, Gainsborough, Prince Albert, Florence Nightingale, the Singer family (of Singer sewing Machine fame) and Jacqueline du Pre. It is no ordinary 'Christian biography'. Her family at one stage owned much of Chelsea, including the land on which Harrods now stands.Frances's life story gives us glimpses into the way they worked together, and their shared values. Both were very modest about their contributions, and lived modestly. John Stott lived in a small two-roomed flat, from which he worked. His Study Assistant had a desk in Stott's small bedroom - the desk had been rescued from a skip. Frances worked in a small office looking out onto a brick wall. The book concludes with a summing-up of John Stott's and Frances Whitehead's joint legacy. This includes the founding and establishing of two global movements. Timeline, Family trees, Appendices, and over 30 photographs.

Authority and Joy are words rarely paired, but are inseparable in the Christian life. This short book, powerfully-reasoned from Scripture, brings a message of confidence in the Bible, and in Christ himself. Here we trace the thread between authority, self-disciple, grace and joy.'We believe in Jesus and we believe Jesus' writes John Stott. Jesus's high view of Scripture is shown in his life and in his ministry. Christ believed that what Scripture says, God says.Sinclair Ferguson helps us better understand the joy of the Lord, running through the Old and New Testaments, a joy which is ours through our union with Christ.Robert Murray McCheyne's Reading Plan, compiled nearly two hundred years ago for his congregation in Dundee, was written to be 'a helper of your joy'. 'Enjoying daily companionship with our Father God is an act of the will. A godly life is built one day at a time.' (Don Cormack, From the Foreword)
