This book deals with a new class of magnetic materials, spin ice. Beyond classical spin ice, the book describes the new physics emerging when quantum coherence (spin liquids, photon-like excitations) and itinerant electrons (anomalous Hall effect) are included in artificial systems.
Masafumi Udagawa is a professor of Gakushuin University in Tokyo. He started his scientific career at the physics department of Tokyo University. He then moved to the applied physics department of Tokyo University as an assistant professor and worked on strongly correlated electron systems. In 2011, he stayed in Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems and worked in the intersection of frustrated magnetism and correlated electron systems. In 2015, he received Young Scientist Award of the Physical Society of Japan and in the same year, he obtained a tenured position in Gakushuin University. His main interest is the fractional excitations of quantum spin liquid phase in frustrated magnetic systems. He applies the technique of electron systems to clarify their mystic character. Ludovic Jaubert works at the frontier between condensed matter theory and statistical physics. He is especially interested in frustrated systems, spin liquids, emergent phenomena, spin dynamics ... Since 2017, Ludovic works at CNRS in the University of Bordeaux. His scientific career, which started at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon, led him to the Max-Planck Institute für Physik komplexer Systeme in Dresden, the University of Oxford and the Okinawa Institute of Science of Technology.
