    Beskrivning

This book discusses the impacts of uranium pollution and its geochemistry and behaviour in abandoned uranium mining sites. The author starts by presenting an overview of uranium occurrence in nature, its radioactivity, uses and market trends as well as the major uranium deposits of the world, followed by the main characteristics of abandoned uranium sites. Particular attention is given to the common reasons for mine abandonment, conventional and non-conventional uranium extraction techniques, and to ore processing and ore extraction chemistry. The author then explores the topic of uranium mining waste and dives into the uranium dynamics in different abandoned mining sites, including abandoned underground mines, abandoned open-pit mine lakes, and abandoned in-situ leaching mines. In this book, readers will also find more about uranium dispersion, ecotoxicological hazards, radioecology and biogeochemistry in abandoned mines. The book ends with a chapter devoted to uranium attenuation in abandoned mining sites, in which the author offers valuable insights into natural attenuation mechanisms and discusses the challenges of natural attenuation in abandoned mines. Readers will find in each chapter a brief introduction to the topic and a chapter conclusion that gathers the main scientific outputs and the author’s perspective from the discussion. This book is a valuable resource to understand the environmental issues of uranium in abandoned mine sites and given its breadth, it will appeal to scholars, researchers, professionals and policymakers alike.

    Mer om författaren

Martin Mkandawire is a Professor of Solid-state Chemistry in the School of Science and Technology and former Industrial Research Chair for Mine Water Management at Cape Breton University, Nova Scotia, Canada. His current research activities are devoted to mine water remediation and management, intending to develop cost-effective strategies. He is also interested in biophotonics and photochemistry of organometallic compounds, development of devices with improved energetics using bio-inspired design and bio-mimicked processes like improving energy conversion efficiency using bio-inspired design and architecture of devices in the organic solar cell; development of Lab-on-chip devices using chip-based biosensors for environmental application; tuning energy band-gap to enable photoactivation in visible light in photocatalytic metal oxide nanoparticles for application water treatment. Before joining Cape Breton University in 2013, he was based at the Technische Universitaet Dresden, Germany, where he worked in different research and academic portfolios before attaining the rank and serving the final five years as Privatdozent (associate professor) at the Institute of Materials Science and Marx Bergman Center for Biomaterials and Institute of General Ecology and Environmental Protection. In the Institute of Materials Science and Marx Bergman Center for Biomaterials, he researched, among others, surface chemistry, synthesis, characterization and functionalization of biomaterial and nanomaterial, use of soft lithography in designing microfluidic systems, developing of biosensors for environmental and medical applications, designing remediation technologies for radioactive contaminants, focusing on radium in mine water of former and abandoned uranium mines. At the Institute of General Ecology and Environmental Protection, he researched the chemical dynamics and biogeochemistry of radionuclides and metalloids, focusing onuranium and arsenic chemistry in abandoned uranium mining and processing sites and some closed coal mines. He is also the author of Ecowriting: Advice to ESL on Effective Scientific Writing in Environmental Science and Engineering, published in 2011 by Nova Sciences and poetry anthologies, The Moulting Serpents: Anthology I and The Moulting Serpents: Anthology II in press with Africa World Press Inc. He is one of the co-editor and contributors of Application of Nanotechnology in Mining Processes: Beneficiation and Sustainability, published by Wiley in 2022.
