This volume aims to provide information aboutand interpretations of the concept of evidentialitylexically realized with certain verbs andapplied to the genre of medical posters. Morespecifically, issues relating to how knowledgeis conveyed through language will be discussedand how evidence for such knowledge is linguisticallytransmitted in a set of specialised texts.This study uses some of the possibilities offeredby electronic corpora in conjunction with concordancetools, which allow quantitative analysis.Thanks to this quantitative analysis, followedby a qualitative interpretation of thefindings, we could detect the pragmatic functionthese evidential items have in contextual use,allowing us to see that evidentiality in medicaldiscourse is intended in a slightly different wayfrom general discourse.

Stefania M. Maci is a full professor of Englishlanguage and translation in the Department ofLanguages, Literatures and Communication atthe University of Bergamo. She has completedher PhD in applied linguistics, Lancaster University,UK. She has been the local supervisorand coordinator of local, national and internationalresearch projects (on academic genres).Her research areas include pragmatics, discourseanalysis and genre analysis with a corpuslinguistics approach, with particularregards to specialised (academic, medical andtourism) discourses and their popularization.
