From 1952 till 1957 he studied Orthodox Theology at the University of Greece, and 1960-1964 Byzantine History and Philosophy at the University of Berlin. He got his Ph.D. in 1963 and from 1964 till 1966 he was Fellow Researcher at the Alexander-von-Humbolt-Stiftung. In 1971 he became Professor of Byzantine Studies and Greek Philology at the University of Würzburg; he retired in 1988. He is Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts of Salzburg.
